OT: Will Ovechkin Be Suspended?

Anyone watching the Caps/Rangers game? Ovi just left his feet hitting Girardi in the head, looked late too. In fact, the puck went right past Ovi's skate and he continued on to crush Girardi in the head. Girardi was wobbled, but got to his feet.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=8myT-qqM0TI

Other than Girardi not requiring a stretcher, the three aspects that Shanny cited with the Torres hit are there:
1. Targeted the head
2. Left Feet
3. Late

Ovi is a repeat offender having been suspended at least three times, including 3 games for launching into Z Michalek in January.

Wadda ya think? Suspended? How many games?

The league said it sent a message with the Torres hit so let us see how consistant the league is in that message. I want to see at least a 5 game Ban.

He probably should get some kind of suspension, primarily because he had a suspension already this season for a head shot. Will be interesting to see where the league's wheel of justice stops spinning.

No suspension. Shanahan won't even show up for a video. Probably send out a press release "We only use Coyotes players to 'send messages' to the league since the league owns the team. Next message will be sent via Klesla."

Ahhh... I'm just being cynical...

If I had to guess I'd guess 3 games though...

If he doesn't get suspended, then raffi shouldn't be either.

His last suspension was three games, and he obviously didn't get the message. Don't we need to elevate? Maybe he needs 17 games to sit at home and think about what he's done.

If he doesn't get suspended then Raffi and the PA should succeed in the appeal.

It's a perfectly clean hit if he doesn't leave his feet.

3-5 games, though, at most.

This. If Ovy gets a couple games, Shanahan is screwed. That would be clear favoritism.

I can't believe the NHL would suspend OV in a playoffs series tied 2-2. A huge stretch... 1 game but I would be shocked.

Most likely, he gets nothing but a warning.

The league suspended torres for that long to send a message to Torres. Ovi is a repeat offender but not as serious as torres. I say 1 maybe 2 games since he's a star in the league.

I disagree, let's review their history.

Ovechkin:
- Dec 1st, 2009: suspended two games (one for the action, and one for a second game misconduct penalty during the season) for a knee-on-knee hit to Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason

- March 14, 2010, Ovechkin sent Hawks defenseman Brian Campbell into the boards after Campbell had dumped the puck to the blue line. Ovechkin was called for boarding, receiving a 5-minute major and a game misconduct,[28] and was suspended for 2 games (for a third game misconduct of the season, a 2-game suspension is automatic).[29] Campbell suffered a fractured clavicle and fractured rib, and was expected to be out 78 weeks.

- January 23, 2012, Ovechkin received a three game suspension for a hit to the head of Zbynek Michalek of the Pittsburgh Penguins

Torres:
- April 6, 2011, Torres was suspended four games for a hit to the head of Edmonton Oilers forward Jordan Eberle. Canucks general manager Mike Gillis told media that he "strongly disagree[d] with it", while Torres argued that he did not stick out his elbow or leave his feet to make the hit and that Eberle raised his hand in defence of the oncoming check, indicating that it was not a blindside hit. Eberle was not injured on the play

- July 1, 2011, fined $2,500 for striking Jan Hejda in the head with his forearm in a December 29, 2011, game against the Colorado Avalanche. Two nights later, he struck Minnesota's Nate Prosser in the head after jumping into a hit, earning a two-game suspension.

- April 17, 2012 , 25 Games for the Hossa hit

I saw it posted in the NYR forum that, as per ESPN, the hit will not be looked at.

They are jumping the gun. The league usually takes a little time before announcing a hearing.

and now Shanahan has painted himself into a corner. Washington fans better prepare themselves as I suspect Ovi is gone for awhile.

Hey I hope he gets hit hard but with the Eastern median bias it will not surprise me at all if he doesn't get anything more than a cough and a shrug 'huh? we didn't see nothing wrong' official response. Not saying I favor that but I don't trust them on it.

WHATS going to hurt his case is the fact that the puck was right there at Ovi's feet and he didnt even try to play the puck. then again who the **** knows anymore with the arbitrary way these suspensions go down.

I think you are partially right. However, I'm more inclined to believe its more simple than that. Most of the teams with players that get off are from cities WITH A MEDIA.
The league has tight control of their announcers so nobody will say a thing there.
If they suspend a Capitol, they can't control the uproar or the strong media presence that exists there. It has a real chance to explode into a national PR nightmare.
If they suspend a Coyote, who is going to care. Bickley? That's hilarious. He would just twist it into a story that meets his agenda of getting the team to leave.
Have you really heard anyone around this media wasteland complain about Torres' suspension? There you go.

Of course in this case you have the NY media on the other side so who knows.
