A sure bet to be a reliable, steady defenseman, but not "the" go-to guy on a team, something I believe Subban has in him.

We'll have to wait and see, I guess, but Erik Johnson is always about promises and "upside" while the actual product you get on the ice does not really represent that. Like I said, a steady, reliable defenseman that can assume first unit duties, but not the general on the defense.

I'll just have to pick Subban here. He's just dynamite, on both ends, and he plays with an edge. And he actually does have an incredible upside.
He's been in the league for four seasons. This next season will be his fifth. He's 24. How many defenceman hit their prime at 24? He took major strides this year. He was great defensively, strong on opposing forwards, great at knocking them off the puck, made strong decisions with the puck and at times looked great offensively.

It's okay to say you like Subban better. But to say that Johnson doesn't have incredible upside is laughable. Both Johnson and Subban have very similar tools but Johnson has better size which I think will help him in the long run. Johnson has one more year of pro hockey than Subban and if you watched him this year, especially the last half, you would know he started to make big strides. Just because he doesn't play in a canadian market and get talked about often doesn't mean he's not the better defenceman.

Classic case on HF of a player getting overrated because of his draft position.

I take PK everyday of the week.

Nice argument. I like how EJ has lead the Blues or the Avs into the playoffs on his back with spectacular play.. Oh wait, I think I described Subban.

How is this even close? It's PK Subban AINEC.

I have watched enough of Eric Johnson to realize that he is not very good. Eric Johnson is getting overrated in this thread. If he wasn't drafted 1st overall then nobody would be picking him. Avs fans say Eric Johnson is a #1 d-man but they just do that to justify the big trade last year. Avs fans always overrate their own players, you should see how they overrate Stastny and Duchene even after their HORRIBLE play this year. So if Avs fans say that Big 6 is a #1 d-man, I wouldn't trust them because they are homers who never bash their own players. Plus I'm pretty sure the rest of the NHL fans who aren't Avs fans combined have watched EJ more than all of Avs nation so they know more about him than Avs fans do.

He's actually getting underrated because of his draft position.

When did this happen?
When he played a huge part on the Habs miracle run two years ago when they lost in the ECF in 5 against the Flyers, after upsetting both the Caps and Pens.

I was watching but I'm asking when did Subban "carry" the Habs into the playoffs?

Here to learn.

Carried the team into the playoffs with two games played? How do we switch our vote? Any player that can play 2 games and manage to lead his team into the playoffs is surely the better player.

You know, I think PK Subban is a better defenseman now, and when push comes to shove I would probably take him, but I don't know that he has the larger amount of upside, as he just isn't physically talented in the way Erik Johnson is.

Subban does more with his 6 foot frame than he does with his.

Johnson-35
Subban-26

Johnson had 93 less penalty minutes, despite only having one less fight.

Johnson put up 2 less powerplay points, despite playing 8 less games, and averaging more than a minute less per game on the powerplay.

Subban:
Gp-77, G-14, A-24, Pts-38, rookie season (21 years old)
Gp-81, G-7, A-29, Pts-36, Sophomore season (22 years old)

Johnson:
Gp-69, G-5, A-28, Pts-33, rookie season (19 years old)
Injured whole year
Gp-77, G-10 , A-29 , Pts-39 , Sophomore season (21 years old)

So very similar rookie seasons, despite Johnson being 2 years younger in his. Then he had a better sophomore year, despite being one year younger in his season.

Anyways, I think a lot of it is preference. Bigger and steadier, or faster and more dynamic. Both can throw big hits, and have produced similar offense. Can't go wrong with either. Subban isn't likely to produce as little as Johnson has the last two seasons, but I think going forward they're numbers will always be close. Subban more goals, Johnson more assists.
This post is very good. EJ is better on the defensive side of the puck, and Subban is better on the offensive side. Both players still have plenty of room to improve.

Your right in ways. I don't think Erik Johnson will ever by the physical force PK subban will be, despite the fact he's significantly larger.

That said, his size does help him, mainly in the fact that it allows him to weather the forecheck better and shield the puck.

That doesn't change the fact that Erik Johnson does some things out there that you simply don't see very often from a player with his size. He is as talented physically as anyone in the league.
