I score it 3-2 Thomson, the judges probably have it 3-2 Melendez

Wow, thought Thomson won that pretty blatantly.

Even though the judges gave it to Gilbert his stock drops after that fight. He's a good fighter, but the top lightweight in the world doesn't scrape by guys like Josh Thomson & Jorge Masvidal.

I had Thompson winning and I picked Melendez. Hell I thought it was 10-8 round 4. Glad the crowd is booing.

It's a joke that some consider Melendez the top LW, let alone the top fighter, in the world.

This fight highlights the problems with MMA scoring. Gilbert eeks out 3 rounds and Thomson decisively wins 2. How do you create a scoring system that accurately evaluates that type of fight? 10-9's across the board doesn't cut it.

Japan's scoring system with the whole fight judged?

I like Japans scoring system but it has it's problems as well. Guys could lose the majority of the fight only to come back in the last few minutes and steal the decision.

Yup, that's how it should be IMO. I've always thought that.

For those bashing Melendez, when Thomson is on his game he's right at the top of the division too. He's not consistent enough to stay there, but when he brings it there are few better.

Cormier, elite wresting combined with top notch boxing. He has the perfect combination to do a lot of damage in the HW divsion.

True but I think it's better than the 10-9. Still there's not going to be a perfect system. And Cormier is damn impressive. Should've picked him

Cormier looked great tonight, he improves with every performance. If they're giving him one more fight in Strikeforce I really hope it's Fedor. Realistically we're probably going to see a squash match against Tim Sylvia or Kharitonov

So does Barnett now make the jump to the UFC? Have him and Dana put the differences behind them? I wouldn't mind seeing Barnett fight Carwin when/if he ever returns or someone of that ilk.

I don't think so. I watched a few interviews with Barnett and it doesn't even seem like he's all that interested in crossing over to the UFC.

This. Supposedly Josh Thomson on his day gets the better of guys like Fitch and Koscheck in the gym. He has all the skills in the world in every domain of MMA--he's just injured 90% of the time.

On scoring, boo to the Pride idea. Rewarding whichever guy is winning at the end (which in practice is what happens when you judge the fight as a whole) is dumb. It's bad enough that last minute takedowns decide a round. Do you want the same judges who do that dumb **** the power to judge a fight as a whole? In fights where the margin of victory is different in the various rounds, 10-10s and 10-8s can come into play. The problem with Thomson was that none of his rounds were 10-8s,

I couldnt agree more. Durability is the only thing that has kept the punk from being a consistent top 5/10 lw in the world. He is a UFC caliber fighter.
