Unsung Hero: Alec Martinez

For all the praise of our defense, Voynov's amazing play, and Doughty's resurgence as a potential Norris candidate, I feel like Martinez' stellar play hasn't been mentioned. I was skeptical of Martinez in the past, but I take it all back! Martinez has stepped up in a HUGE way; he's aggressive in the offensive zone and knows when to pinch, he's been a rock in the defensive zone, and he's been physical and standing up for teammates!

Johnson who? Atta boy A-Mart!

he was fantastic. Early on in the series all the talk was about the depth of the Blues D-Core. As time went on, it was obvious that Martinez showed why the Kings D-core was just better than the Blues and it wasn't even close!

Along with Trevor Lewis up front, he has GREATLY improved his physical game since Sutter came aboard. Very impressed with A-Mart.

There is no more calm duo versus a two on one than Quick and Martinez.

No more proposals from me to trade him to the Islanders/Oilers/etc.!

So so glad we didn't trade him.

Love this thread; love AMart.

Additionally, it should be mentioned that Dean's patient handling of VV and AMart was what ultimately made Jack expendable (and Carter obtainable).

I've never really been an A-mart fan, but this past series I have felt way more comfortable with him on the ice then Voynov, who to me did not have the best series defensively.
Hopefully A-Mart continues to impress me.

I still do not think that the difference between Carter and Johnson is a first, but what can you do, what's done is done.
I'm glad to see Johsnon playing so well to close out the year and now with Team USA (Captain!!).
I think as time goes on it will go down as Columbus winning this deal, however a cup can chage that.

Agree with this.

He, Trevor Lewis, Jordan Nolan, and Dwight King have been fantastic at what they are supposed to be doing.

Depth, and energy grind line guys who occasionally chip in offense.

Lewis has been flying the last 10 games honestly.

The guy is SO aggressive on the forecheck and super defensively responsible.

And Martinez just makes the smart, safe plays and takes calculated risks probably better then Voynov or Doughty. He pinches when it is wise to do so, and pulls back when he has to. He uses the boards rather then going through the middle, and he hardly ever gets drawn out of the shooting lanes on D.

Lewis had a great game 3, and has not looked out of place at all. I remember when Sutter first came on board he mentioned how impressed he was with Lewis's skill level.

A-Mart is such a calm player, very glad that we have him.

Another thing i noticed... Carter had a great defensive game yesterday.

Not to detract from this thread as Alec DOES deserve it, but, really, we could probably do a thread like this for every King who's not a "big name".

For me, that's been the most fun thing about these playoffs....watching virtually everyone step up to another level.

I mean, Greene with 4 points in 4 games? REALLY???

Yeah I came in here to post this as well. Everyone is playing at least average, no one is dragging his feet out there.

Even Bernier is opening the door in beast mode!

You could make a thread about every player on the team. They're all playing their best.

Sutter has had faith in a Voynov-Martinez pairing at times aswell, generally after pk's, which is a huge compliment to Martinez, being trusted as the experienced guy to cover Voynov

Fox said Lewis had 8 hits game 4:

on the Kings Live Postgame Show on Fox Sports West. Jim Fox was very impressed with Lewis' play recently, and so have I been.

Kudos to Voynov, Martinez, Lewis, King, and Nolan for improving so much from last year to this one...

Kudo's Indeed!!!

All this that you speak of as major positives in our young players A-Mart as this thread is named etc...

Speaks volumes as well for our development group in Manchester and also for
Dean & the Scouts for drafting and signing these guys (ie free agents)!!!
Full Props to our organization for this run! And our Vets for leading the
Utes (youths) and doing it by example.

Alot has been heaped on Coach Sutter as well and he deserves as much credit as
all the rest do... So proud to be a Kings fan, I am shocked and happy to see all our hopes come to fruitions!

Alec is a shining jewel.

Not saying he's gonna' be a star, just a well-above average D-Man with a complete game.
Great attitude too.

I am absolutely in love with our defense.

As a Vancouver fan I have to say I was very impressed with Martinez's play. He was solid and calm, even when playing against some of our top players. We've played some very tough defences over the last few years, but I think your Kings defence was the toughest of all. Usually, we had a bottom-pairing defenceman a la Campoli, O'Brien, or Boychuk that we could exploit.

Going into our series I knew your top defencemen were going to be strong, but I was expecting to be able to generate offence against Voynov or Martinez. Couldn't they sometimes ... turn the puck over, pinch at the wrong time, miscommunicate, make bad decisions with the puck ... you know, do things that rookie or sophomore players normally do? But to my surprise, and annoyance , they just didn't. If they keep playing like this, the Cup could be yours.

Man the last few games I've really started to notice the physical side of AMart and I ****ing LOVE IT. Always been a fan of the kid but thought he was the odd man out before Jack was traded. Glad he's still here.

Yep. Stoll is back to his great play with two offensive zone penalties in one game, DOUBLING his average. Stellar. At least the fat one has been good.
