He's already had his share of luck with Weber, Rinne, and Erat. Where he has failed is the more routine stuff, like being able to choose a 1st round pick or sign our own home grown players to long term deals.

In those areas he gets routinely fleeced by player's agents or other GMs.
That's basically what I was getting at with the "catch lightning in a bottle" phrase. Once you have a solid roster built with only a few holes it can boil down to simply being at the right place at the right time, or in this context having the right player when the right player becomes available. Sure we might be able to put together a package that is comparable to, or even better than, something like what Dallas took for Ribiero, but what if Dallas had a short list of players it wanted in exchange? What if Eakin was on top of that list? No other team can touch it then.

I'm not saying Poile should be excused for everything because luck hasn't been on his side, but there are times when he really cannot do anything more than what he has done. He has been aggressive as of late. I think he realizes that the attitude of the organization is changing, and he has to change with it. He was passive when he needed to be due to financial constraints. If those constraints really are lifting then he absolutely has to begin being aggressive. If being aggressive is what it takes to keep Suter and Weber, he absolutely has to adapt. I think he has, but it hasn't worked out yet. I'm holding out hope that it will work for him, but if we're really honest with ourselves I think we'll all realize that the odds are stacked against us right now. Or stacked against Poile.

Stoll re-ups with LA for $3.25M. Not sure why Gaustad thinks he is worth close to that (rumored he wants $3M).

Considering Stoll's offensive production, I wouldn't be shocked if he got it.

.27 points per game nets you $3.25M a year. Defensive prowess or no, that's pretty steep.

Wonder how many of the Pollyannas would have scoffed at Suter for JVR or Matt Read before the deadline.

If true toots is a fool. He is a novelty and worth more here than anywhere else. If he goes elsewhere and has a 2G 5A season like he usually does he will not have his popularity to fall back on.

Leafs fan coming in peace.

Could somebody give me a quick rundown on Wilson? Those who believe the "Preds/Leafs" deal rumors are thinking it's going to be him we're trading for.

I see he was a healthy scratch for most of the playoffs though. What issues were there with him?

AH, NO THANK YOU AT ALL!! If Willy goes, it better be for someone named Ryan or Nash.

Of course they would, they've been trying to pawn those two pieces off on everybody for months around here. I sure hope that's not all Wilson is worth...

wilson just isn't a trotz kind of guy. in simple terms.

he was our best forward offensively the first half while playing with guys like jordin tootoo and nick spaling. never been put into the ideal situation here as far as his talents. with the right linemates on a top 6, he'd be good for 50 points a season.. easy. play away from the puck lacks focus at time.

i could have seen him traded for schenn with suter's possible departure. now, the only thing i could see him traded for is kessel or lupul.. we need help in our top 6.

either way, wilson has lots of room to improve and get better. i could see him possibly being traded but not for kulemin or macarthur. both pretty redundant pieces for nashville.

The same jvr that always seems to be hurt and read who was in his first season? Who would have taken suters place on the blue line? Ellis? Blum? That would have been a move backwards.

How many times are we going to have the discussion that keeping Suter was key for any possible success in the playoffs for this team. Hind sight is great and saying Poile made a mistake. No other teams in the NHL traded their UFAs that were in the hunt for the cup so why should we? If we did people would say we are not taking any chances. Poile took chances, made some good moves and they didn't work. it happens.

Thanks for the breakdown. It's very possible that Wilson and JVR were both offered for Schenn, and Burke chose JVR of the two.

I am so damn sick of these comments. What are you talking about? What about Lindback? AK? Gaustad? Gill? There's 4 trades in literally the last 4 months, not to mention Radulov coming back.

Poile is NOT a conservative, sit on his hands GM! I don't get where people get this idea. He's no Brian Burke, but that is totally ok. He makes smart, calculated moves, but its not like he never does anything.

i think people just want the "big splash" .. those are hard to come by.

regardless, with suter and weber both possibly out the door.. if poile doesn't make a pretty big move somewhere.. we will likely be looking at a top 10 pick in next years draft.

Leafs fan here. Just curious, realistically, if you guys were to trade Colin Wilson what would be fair value?

Franson/Gunnarson + Kadri/Colbourne?

neither really fill any needs.. not sure on value but we have no reason to make this trade.
