What a weird argument. Yes, the team won more games in this year's playoffs. Is that really significant? No, not imo. They got hammered in the second round both years.

The only reason the Buffalo series got past 5 games was the difference in goaltending. Against Boston, people forget that Thomas pretty much stole game 2. That was the turning point of the series, and I think that the team wasn't prepared to deal with another team with an elite goalie while the Flyers' were struggling.

Point is, different circumstances led to the losses the last two years and there's really no value in comparing how many wins they were able to eek out. Both years they won a series in which they were clearly the team that played better, then got pasted in round two.

His statement was we "went one game further." Again, when your playoff run ends in 11 games, in consecutive years, in the same round, you haven't gone one game further. 11=11.
That's...not how that works.

Uh yes it is. After I pointed out both postseasons ended after 11 games in the second round, he changed it to "we won one more game."

That's because winning one more game is getting one game further.

Games played versus games won was never part of it. Try again, or start a thread with a poll for that.

Two postseason runs that both ended in the second round after 11 games played, and trying to say one was "one game further" was what the discussion is about.

After realizing his mistake, he changed his point to "we won one more game." No one ever questioned that. Nice try though. Maybe you can spin it another way, but no matter how dizzy you get, 11 will always be equal to 11.

No, it means you won one more game. Getting further is accomplished by either advancing to the next round, or playing more games but still being eliminated in the same round as the previous year. Remember 11=11.

This whole tangent is because the OP is angry that the poll shows people actually like Lavy's system, right?

11 equaling 11 doesn't mean jack. It's about wins. 5 is a larger number than 4. If the Flyers had beaten the Pens in 5 games instead of 6 (you know...done better) would you be arguing that the Flyers did worse this year? Because it sure seems like it.

It does when you falsely claim "we went one game further." That's probably why he changed it to "we won one more game" after realizing both postseason runs ended in the second round after 11 games

Never questioned it, once he changed it from "we went one game further" to "we won one more game."

That's a hypothetical, and I'll leave the future predicting to you. It was never about if this, or if that. Two postseason runs that both ended in the second round after 11 games played, and trying to say one was "one game further" was what the discussion is about.

He corrected it after it was pointed out that 11=11. How many times do you want to try and twist it? He realized his error and changed it to "we won one more game." That was many many posts ago.

I could understand if he never changed it, but he corrected himself.

Dude, everybody here but you knew exactly what GKJ meant. He didn't change his meaning. he just had to explain it further because somehow you didn't realize he meant "1 more win."

Which means nothing. The Flyers did better. They won in 6 instead of 7, then lost in 5 instead of 4. You almost have to be trolling to try to sell that as equal.

Never tried to "sell" either of the things you stated. The point was two postseason runs, both ending in the second round after 11 games. The OP changed his statement from "we went one game further" to "we won one more game." He corrected it after it was pointed out both lasted 11 games.

No one questioned the number of games won or if one postseason run was better than the other.

Maybe he realizes the Caps no longer play "pond hockey" as he used them for in his example of what team plays pond hockey

So by this logic if we swept the Pens and then lost to NJ that would be 9 games. So I'm guessing since 11>9 then we wouldn't have gotten as far in the playoffs this season as last season?

No. It's not about hypotheticals it's about what actually happened.

Again, two postseason runs, both ending in the second round, both being exactly 11 games long. One didn't go further than the other.

After it was pointed out that both runs were exactly the same number of games the OP changed it to "we won more game." He realized his own logical fallacy, why cant you?

Since it went right over your head I'll break it down for you. Washington Capitals pond hockey was used to reference a style of play that is most often associated with them.

Sorta like when someone uses the term "Nazi Germany" when referencing overbearing governments, even though that ended around 1945.

Understand now? Ever heard of hyperbole?

hy·per·bo·le   [hahy-pur-buh-lee]

noun Rhetoric

1. obvious and intentional exaggeration.
2. an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally, as “to wait an eternity.”
