- bury Gomez in the minors (assuming no trade option exists)
- trade Kaberle for best possible return (as small as it may be)
- re-sign RFA's:
Subban (4-6 yrs @ 4.5-5M)
Price(4-6yrs @ 5.75-6.25M)
Eller(2-3yrs @1.75-2.25M)
Emelin (2-3yrs @1.25-1.5M$)
Diaz (2-3yrs @ 1.25-1.5M$)
White (2yrs @ 850K-1M$)
Geoffrion (1-2yrs @ qualifying offer)
Palushaj (1-2yrs @ qualifying offer)
St-Denis (1 yr @ qualifying offer)
- re-sign UFA's
Moen (2-3yrs @ 1.75-2M$)
Staubitz (1 yr @ league minimum)
To CGY
Weber
late pick (5th)
To MTL
Backlund
* Cgy could use a RH dman with offensive/pp ability, Backlund progression is stalled (like Weber), but still an intriguing young player, versatile enough to play W/C, defensively sound with untapped offensive ability. Both teams swap struggling young players, habs add a bit given Backlund's greater potential, despite Weber's greater production.
that's the roster heading into draft/UFA.
Bourque - Pleks - Gionta
MaxPac - DD - Cole
Leblanc - Eller - Backlund
Moen - - White
(Geoffrion/Palushaj/Staubitz)
Subban - Gorges
Markov -
Diaz - Emelin
(St.Denis)
Price
Budaj
----------------------
UFA's
#1 target: Parise.
get on the phone with Savard & have him use his personal relationship with Parise's dad to lobby for Parise to be the Habs next "legend"
Sign Parise to 4-6 yrs @ 7-8M$
alternatives: Whitney (1-2 yrs @ 4.5-5.5M$), Parenteau (2-4 yrs 3.5-4.5M$), Kost or Penner (1 yr 2.5-3.5M$)
#2 target: B.Jackman/B.Stuart/B.Allen
all 3 will be in high demand, Allen's probably our best shot if only b/c of Cole factor.
Sign Allen to 2-3yrs @ 3.5-4M$
#3 target S.Pahlsson
should be cheap, strong on faceoffs, familiarity with Moen, durable & can play solid PK minutes (played for haws while Bergevin was asst coach)
Sign Pahlsson to 1 yr @ 1.25-1.5M$
#4 target: Hannan/Salvador/Gill/Bouillion/Clark/Sarich/Souray
Sign whomever will take 1.25M$/1 year deal, with the understanding that they are coming in to compete for bottom pairing spot with Diaz/Emelin, and that they are to play a mentor role with our younger dmen.
Salary = ~ 63M$ for 20 players (with Bourque in vs Leblanc)
leaving 1.3M$ + whatever the cap goes up, for the 2 extra roster players
not much wiggle room, although if Bourque loses out to Leblanc/Backlund in camp his 3.3M$ goes to Hamilton to start the year.
still a bit "smallish" up front, but for those concerned with "size", Eller/Backlund/Leblanc are all 6' or taller, Eller/Backlund should top 200pds at camp to go with MaxPac/Cole/Moen/White/Pahlsson/Bourque/Geoffrion all in the 6' 200pd range (leaving only DD/Pleks/Parise/Gionta/Palushaj as the sub 6' "smurfs").
Otherwise, top-9 is talented, strong skating and has lots of strong 2-way players, while also having solid scoring potential from all 3 lines. 4th line is strong enough to play solid role, Pahlsson is an excellent faceoff guy to go with the crash/bang play of Moen/White.
Defense is solid, especially if Markov stays healthy. Solid mix of skill & toughness with the addition of Allen & UFA.
Subban well surrounded to have a breakout type year.
Price is Price.
didn't factor in the #3 pick anywhere, if he gives us anything next year great, but fine if he spends the year in CHL/Europe/AHL getting fully NHL ready.
summer 2013, likely that Gionta or Pleks would need to be moved (replaced by the #3 pick) to facilitate MaxPac and (maybe) DD's. Otherwise we should be fine for 2013-14, and quite possibly ready for a dominating season if our young players progress adequately (Price, Subban, MaxPac, Price, Eller, Leblanc, Emelin, Diaz, Backlund, White... all under 25 and with room to grow (figuratively and literally) over next 2 seasons.
With a solid coaching system in place, that's a division contender & strong playoff team next year, and even better the following year.
GO HABS GO!

A Gomez buy out will be 4.3 in the 2nd year if they buy him out this Summer.
How good of a player do you really think the Habs will be able to get to "replace" Gomez, when 4.3 cap hit is assessed for a nothing player.
And Subban needs to be signed as well.
Thing is, even if we are loser in this buy-out, I'd do it anyway.
Gomez just 'being' on the Montreal roster; that he's injured, scratched, sent down to the minors, whatever, IS the problem. Just having his name float around for another season is the worst thing that could happen to this team. Enough of him. He's a distraction for the media, the fans, even the team, and it's starting to get old.
The word 'Gomez' must not be pronounced in this locker room ever again.
This is how I would build the Habs for next season.
Of course it's all hypothetical. UFA'S that I like might not want to sign for Montreal.
Buyout Gomez. He will still count for 3.3 on the cap but you don't want him in Hamilton leading the kids.
Bury Gomez on the farm at 1/2 salary ..he will be claimed somewhere
Trade Weber in the offseason for picks.
Weber is worth a bag of doritos ....see ya later
Re-Sign Moen for 2 Millions/Year. Upgraded from 1.5.
let him go ...30 years old .. White can do his his job cheaper Re-Sign Staubitz for 0.6. He was solid this year for Montreal. He's the perfect tough 4th liner model. He can fight, he can throw a hit. He's seems like a good team player.
Saubitz is ok at 700 k Re-Sign Darche for 0.7. I think as a 4th line winger, he can do the job. Cannot hurt that he's a local guy too.
Darche is a piece of s h i t ...see ya
Re-Sign R.White for 0.7. Can fight, can hit. He's built like a tank and he goes in traffic. Can score the big goal. He's worth it on the 4th line.
White is a keeper
Re-Sign C.Price. Of course I think that he would accept a 6 millions/year contract for 5 years
will be locked up
Re-Sign Subban for 3.5/y for 4 to 5 years approx.
will be locked up Re-Sign Yemelin and Diaz. Emelin for 1.250. Diaz for 0.950.
will be locked up
Signs P-A Parenteau for 3 to 3.5 millions a year. Good 2th line winger. Great passer and he'll give you approx 20 goals a year and he's french so that cannot hurt again.
no way Jose .... no need for another player on the top 6 for now Signs Francis Bouillon to play with Kaberle as the 6th defencement. He's not that tall but he's got big heart and he's built like a tank and is not afraid of physical play. 2 years at 1.3
Cube is a waste of space ...Tinordi should be a third pairing guy not a washed up 37 year old
I would draft Alex Galchenyuk with the 3rd overall pick but I would give him at least another year in juniors since he had that big injury this season.
take the safe pick in Forsberg ... these RUSSIANS have Radulov issues with me
plus ACL surgery is an issue , we cant gamble at # 3 Unless amazing pre season camp. I would let Louis Leblanc plays a leader role in Hamilton to help him develop smoother.
Leblanc either he plays top 6 or trade him , HE IS NOT A BOTTOM 6
what did we draf thim to do play 4th line with junk ? Trade Pleks while he still has value ,ELLER should be our #2 center
if you take Gachenyuk , agreed leave him in junior one more year , then when ready , start phasing him in BERGEVIN , DO NOT PAY THE MIDGET FOR 4 MORE YEARS , HE IS NOT A FRONT LINER , DONT BE STUPID if you use free agency , short term deals ,we have so many fked up contracts we dont need more

Reason: typing
I make a couple of changes to help the identity of this team.
To Anaheim: Tomas Plekanec and Aaron Palushaj
To Montreal: Bobby Ryan and a 3rd round pick
To Colorado: David Desharnais, Alexander Avtsin and Morgan Eliis
To Montreal: Paul Stastny
To New Jersey: Tomas Kaberle
To Montreal: 4th round pick
- Sign Jarret Stoll
- Sign Jim Slater
- Draft Galchenyuk
Max Pacioretty - Paul Stastny - Bobby Ryan
Rene Bourque - Lars Eller - Erik Cole
Louis LeBlanc - Jarret Stoll - Brian Gionta
Travis Moen - Jim Slater - Ryan White
To those keen on dumping defencemen, I don't think it's wise to go into next season with 7 NHL dmen, especially if Markov is one of them. Serviceable 7th and 8th D aren't as easy to find as you think. Definitely not as common as serviceable depth forwards and backup goalies. I'd make sure there is an alternative in place before dealing Weber.
Pacioretty - Paul Stastny - Erik cole
Bourque - Desharnais - Parenteau
T.J Galiardi - Eller - Moen
Goeffrion - White - Staubitz
Good first line
Good 2nd line, Bourque will score 25 goal playing with Desharnais
The 3rd line can produce and the 4th line is your IN YOUR FACE checking line
MTL trade Pleckanec + Yannick Weber to COL for Paul Stastny and 2nd round pick 2012.
MTl trade Rafael Diaz and 5nd round pick 2012 (COL) to San jose for TJ Galiardi.
MTL sign Parenteau to 2 years deal /8M
MTL sign Shane O'brien to 1 year deal / 2M
MTL sign Travis Moen to 2 years deal / 4M
MTL sign Brad Staubitz to 1 year deal / 0.6M
Buyout Gomez or send him to Hamilton
They Draft :
1st round : Mikhail Grigorenko (He learn french, big and skilled, futur franchise center, Perfect fit)
2nd Round: Cristoval Nieves /Nicolas Kerdiles /Tim Bozon
2nd Round: Dalton Thrower / -
3nd round: Charles Hudon /Raphael Brussière /Dillon Fournier

Yeah...I don't really get how buy outs work, but according to capgeek it would be
3.523
4.523
1.666
1.666
So I'm gonna assume that's right, as opposed to your figure. Although I did alwyas think the way you've explained it was how it worked as well.
And Subban's contract will be at least 3.5 I would guess. Maybe even 4+ if they sign him longer than 2-3 years
For the life of me why the **** do buyouts count against cap? It's just ****ing stupid.
A player is being paid, contract honoured. Why the hell did the NHLPA insist on buyouts counting against cap? And why the hell did Buttman agree to this? It is simply stupid.
No way buy out Gomer. We gave him every chance, and no NHL player or agent would blame us for demoting him.
For players under the age of 26, a buyout costs the team one-third of remaining contract value.
For players 26 or older, a buyout costs two-thirds of remaining contract value.
On a buyout, the team takes a cap hit for a percentage of the buyout value (according to a very complex formula) spread over twice the length of the remaining contract years.
So I think that would be this for Gomez instead of what I said. You had it right since it's it would be on 4 years, it would suck on that second year lol but getting Gomez was a big mistake and the team have to pay for it I guess :S
IT COUNTS AGAINST THE CAP! That is the whole point, who cares what Molson has to pay Gomer, and when? GET HIS ****ING SALARY OFF THE CAP. Don't make me rant guys! Oh wait, I'm already ranting...
To Anaheim: Tomas Plekanec and Aaron Palushaj
To Montreal: Bobby Ryan and a 3rd round pick
I doubt Palushaj is even worth a 3rd. Plekanec would never get Ryan back..

I think we should trade Pleckanec&Weber to Pits for Malkin and a first instead. I'd add a strong prospect like Robert Mayer or Dany Masse to even things out. I'd consider adding the rights to Engqvist if they throw in Simon Despres.
You forgot that we finished in a terrible positiion while icing about the same team punkeat proposed... P-a parenteau and bouillon aren,t going to be enough, bouillon wasn't even considered good enough for mtl a few years ago. So if you want to improve, you have to see it like it is : we suck. Our d looks atrocious,we lack high end talent up front ( center obviously) and we suck. Oh, and did i forgot to mention that we suck?

So the Habs would lose games because Gomez's name is "floating around the team" playing in Hershey, Alaska or Moscow?
That's a good one, I needed a good laugh this morning. A buyout for Gomez is not justifyable.
Stewart : 3.250 for 3 years

Pacioretty : 3.000 + 3.000 + 3.000 + 3.750 + 4.000 + 4.250 = 21.000 or [3.500] on cap hit

You act as though Plekanec + Weber for Stastny + 2nd is absurd. I don't see how it is.
Well, I figure you draw up the first cut like this:

... and while you do everything you can to make the Parise/Suter dreams come true, you realize all the while that it's not really going to happen. (Although we *can* have the cap space to accomodate it - it won't happen for reasons other than cap space). So you have to also have a few other copies behind the first page of where you see things going when you don't get Parise/Suter.
I have Geoffrion and Staubitz above, but you can put them in a camp battle with Palushaj or other filler types without it really affecting the cap.
I've dealt Kaberle for a whatever-th round pick and banished Gomez, but they may drift back into the picture when the mega-$$$ to Parise/Suter go by the wayside. Kaberle may drift back into the lineup. But he'd have to be joined by a solid guy like everybody already mentions of the Bryan Allen, Barret Jackman, etc type. And if I wasn't blowing big money on Parise, I'd have to get at least one semi-scoring winger to replace him, but I'd also look at improving things in the bottom-6 with the remaining $$$. Fewer openings for the kids in that scenario.
One example could be like below... have to get a couple of top-6-candidate wingers, but they are likely to be risky ones. I don't really care what names you want to pick and choose in there... preferably not purely soft/small guys... I took AK and Penner, but go ahead and create a list of 10-12 options, really... you probably have to throw offers in the direction of that many guys on July 1st, and see if any stick.
Similarly the D that replaces Suter... throw the $4Mish offers in direction of all the best candidates. Jackman is only illustrative of my favourite, but you have to put a few other names in the hat. And then maybe look at a depthier vet/toughness addition as well. Again, I put O'Brien as one candidate, but you probably need a list of 10 or so.
Then for me to compensate for not having landed the really big name UFAs, I want to make a rock solid 4 lines, and we again *can* have the cap space to do that. It means extra development years for kids like Leblanc and Geoffrion, fine, they can use it. The names are again placeholders, make a list of all kinds of options there, Prust isn't likely to leave New York, and Gaustad is actually a bit overpriced if you ask me, even if he's still representative of a player calibre/type I'd like to put in that lineup spot...

I'd like to trade Gionta but something tells me we're not going to get much for him so if we keep him I would team him with Eller & Moen. Use the same template as with the DD line. One surf with two bigger players. So our third line
Moen.....Eller.....Gionta
Our second line would only have Pleks on it right now. We need to find two wingers for him outside the organization.
*****.....Pleks......******
Our 4th line right now has only White on it and an occasional Stabitz.
******....White.....*******
Stabitz
The rest of the forwards:
Darche is our 13/14th forward
Palushaj & Geoffrion do not make a contending team
Leblanc is not ready.
Gomez should be removed from the line up
Blunden........meh.
Bourque....double meh
So that means we need 4 wingers. Two for pleks and two for White (or a centerman and a winger for that 4th line.)
In the off season I would make a hard serious push for Suter & Parise. If successful that leaves us with a respectable defense and 3 holes in our forward lines.
Patches DD Cole
Parise Pleks ****
Moen Eller Gionta
***** ***** White
Stabitz
Markov Suter

If we can't get Suter I would push for a hard nosed stay at home d-man like Allen.
So we have to find a 2nd line winger and a couple of gritty 4th liners. And Parenteau is not the answer.
This is how I would build the Habs for next season.
Of course it's all hypothetical. UFA'S that I like might not want to sign for Montreal.

Re-Sign Subban for 3.5/y for 4 to 5 years approx.
Re-Sign Yemelin and Diaz. Emelin for 1.250. Diaz for 0.950.

I like your team, I agree with you on Gaustad, he'd be the best fourth line centre in the league, but 2.6 is pretty steep for that position. It's alright if it's just something like two years though. I'm not sure I could deal with watching Penner for a full season though, especially if he and Bourque are both in the lineup.

Bourque, Penner, and AK all... well, we wouldn't lack for risk factor. I don't know who the coach is or how he brings them all together or gets them all to play to their potential. Probably no coach can. I straight out don't like Bourque or Penner, and am somewhat ambivalent on AK, but we do need depth on the wings, and maybe if you have enough of those guys, their slumps can't possibly all overlap... some will be hot just long enough to offset the others being cold?
Anyway, we do need a couple more wingers who at least have some potential to score. I definitely want to pursue it on the UFA market with just Mr. Molson's money, though, I don't want to try making trades when we don't really have enough depth to trade from.
I probably need to scour the FA list a bit more carefully too. But as a fan who actually isn't paid to put together the 100+-page report, I'm always wary of putting too much time on that until we get closer to July 1st, because a bunch of the guys who are on it now won't be by then.
