Cool to see it confirmed. Wonder what the cap hit is like.

Great signing by Fletch. Third pairing guy who can play the odd 20+ minute game. Physical, decent skater, smart player, veteran.

Stoner is the type of defenseman that (injury history aside) you'd have to pay $2m+ for on the market.

So, this means our defense for next year has a few locks. Prosser, Gilbert, Stoner, and Spurgeon are probably all locks. That leaves Brodin, Scandella, Kampfer, and whomever else we sign to a deal in the offseason. Hopefully we add at least a little bit more experience to that blueline because it looks really nasty right now.

good price--doubly so if he can stay healthy. if not, i look forward to another complete cluster**** of a year on the back end with even more guys in rotation. I'd say the logic here would mean they'd be willing to offer a contract to Gui, too. God knows we need the physical presence on the blueline.

It is what it is although this quote from the Russo blog pretty much sums up Minnesota's blue line last year:

Quote:
I remember asking Yeo with a few games left in the season if the Wild could afford to re-sign Stoner considering the myriad injuries he's sustained throughout his entire pro career. Yeo said, "Can we afford not to?"
Pretty sure Yeo meant it as a positive to Stoner but at least when I read it it came off as the team can't do any worse (and given who they were playing at the end of the season he may have a point). Contract-wise, it's a low enough number where a good and healthy year of Stoner is a steal and more injuries don't break the bank but the latter will be extremely disappointing.

My only concern is how this affects the potential signing of a non-star defenseman. If we can't land a Suter, are we at the point where we have too many defensemen under contract to sign a Colaiacovo or Oduya?

It's funny to see people on the main board don't really care but they do for his last name.

Good deal. Yeah, he's got injury issues. But he's a warrior when he's in the line-up, and he's the kind of guy you want in the playoffs.

In seriousness, he probably moves a lot of jerseys...

Honestly, it's a pretty spectacular deal for a physical, steady, reliable UFA defenseman.

wow, that's crazy cheap. I was thinking it'd be at least $2.5m.

I was thinking more like $1.75, but yeah. I'm really impressed with Fletch on this one.

It's a move that can't be fully judged until the end of free agency.

How? Stoner's an injury-prone physical defenseman who doesn't score and ends up in the box probably once every other game. He's played 2 seasons in the NHL and hasn't played more than 60 games in either. There's not a whole lot of upside to his game. His biggest attribute other than size is "character." Honestly if a team is paying $2.5M for that they better be in Europe.

(And this isn't a knock on Stoner. I just don't see how a NHL team would spend that much money on a 3rd pairing defenseman coming off an injury.)

Based on the absurd prices D-men were going for last summer, I'm guessing anything under $2M is going to look like a bargain this year.

I think it's a very low-risk, decent reward signing. He's not an offensive dynamo, but I can't say there have been a lot of times where he's been in the lineup where I've thought "dammit, what were you thinking, Stoner?" I definitely prefer this signing to, say, Prosser's.

Since Stoner doesn't/can't drop the gloves anymore, I almost prefer Falk as a 3rd pairing guy over Stoner, but it's not very big of a preference.

Playing the same guys as last years' team is not going to excite any Wild fans that greatly going into next season. Good enough deal, it's nice to have depth.

Somewhere I compared the two, both winning and losing, +/-, records in vs out, and Stoner came out pretty far ahead of Falk. Falk's a little better skater and a little more offense but nowhere near as good defensively.

Honestly Falk needs to be in Houston for at least another season or two. He was rushed up, a lot like Prosser, due to lack of decent defensemen with the big club.

Good signing. Glad to see him re-signed. Adds that tough and gritty aspect to our team while being good defensively as well. He just needs to work on staying healthy and also on his passing and puck movement skills.

good deal. I always thought that a bottom pairing of Falk/Stoner-Spurgeon could be quite effective as this team starts to solidify its defensive core.

Not sure what were gonna do with prosser for the next two years though. I suppose that we're planning on running D pairs like this year

Gilbert- Scandy/Brodin
Spurg - Scandy/Brodin/X
combo of prosser/falk/stoner

well so i have no idea of what they are planning for the D....
