Minnesota has re-signed defenseman Clayton Stoner to a two-year contract extension.

SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Minnesota Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has re-signed defenseman Clayton Stoner to a two-year contract extension.
Stoner, 27 (2/19/85), collected five points (1-4=5), a plus-3 rating and 54 penalty minutes (PIM) in 51 games with Minnesota this season. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound native of Port McNeill, B.C., led team defensemen and ranked third on the club in plus/minus rating and penalty minutes. Stoner was also nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy by the Minnesota Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association. He recorded nine points (2-7=9) in 57 contests with the Wild in 2010-11 and ranked first on the team with a plus-5 rating and third with 96 PIM. Stoner ranked tied for third among NHL rookie defensemen in PIM and sixth in plus/minus amongst rookies that played more than 50 games. He made his NHL debut at Montreal on Dec. 17, 2009.
Stoner has totaled 16 points (3-13=16), a plus-9 rating and 170 PIM in 116 career NHL games during three seasons with Minnesota. He was selected by Minnesota in the third round (79th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

From what I've seen of him, I like him. Not a bad signing IMO.

Plus, I think of all the name jokes.

Great signing by Minny. I wish Montreal could get their hands on him. I hope he continues to develop well.

****. ****.

the UFA I wanted most (realistically).

edit: it's only for $1.05m per too, so cheap. On the open market, he's getting $2.5m+. I wonder if the possible lockout had anything to do with it.

Are you saying 2.5 million per year? I don't think he would get that. He has been very reliable when he is on the ice the last two years, but he has had a lot of trouble staying healthy missing 30 games or so the last two years and 50 games the year before that. Always has some nagging injury that keeps him out.

I think he signed the extension knowing he is in a position to be a top 4 defender in Minnesota, and hoping that if he can stay healthy for the next two years he can really cash in next time up.

Stoner is an effective 3rd pairing defenseman.

he's that cheap because of his brutal injury history. Here's hoping he can still play the physical game he needs to while staying healthy! @$1m per year this is a no risk signing. He's our second highest paid Defenseman btw. yeah...i accept your pity.

I'm happy with this signing. Anything more would have been an overpayment.

Stoner is a good bottom-pairing shutdown defenseman, but his injuries have kept him from truly excelling.

Great to see him re-signed. Always liked him.

Now we just need to work on re-signing Lats and Harding.

They should get Corey Potter from Oilers. Potter and Stoner would be a fun D-pairing.

if only there were a "Bong" playing somewhere in our division. I'd die to see one of the NHL pun people headline the site with "Stoner hits Bong"

what? why? i didn't get the memo.
does this have something to do with us getting an ECHL affiliate? I really don't know why we'd need to sign a goalie from outside our stable of prospects.

The only Anthony Paolucci I can find is a golfer. Never heard Paolucci the goalie before.
