And it makes absolutely no sense to deal him from a management perspective even in the proposed 'hey we can trade him for assets if he plans on retiring this offseason anyway'
1. You piss off the other GM who thinks he's getting Alfie for a season
2. You piss off the fanbase by trading Alfie
3. You piss off your players by showing them that when push comes to shove, they aren't people, they're just assets
4. You piss off the league because you're clearly attempting to circumvent the cap
5. You wouldn't get much back anyway

If Alfie is dealt to get to the cap floor and then insta-retires I would think that is grounds for tampering or conducting a deal under false pretenses. I would be surprised if a GM took Alfie and risked investigation by the NHL.
Don't care about option two, but lets look at a Team such as the Islanders who struggle against the cap. If Alfredsson was to be traded to them before he officially files his retirement papers, or during for that matter, his cap hit would allow an organization to use his 4.5 million dollar(Around that atleast) cap hit to stay under the cap. Alfredsson may not care, especially if he is joinhg upper management as a draftpick could help the team moving foward.
Or we can grab a top six foward who is overpaid instead of retaining Alfredsson's cap hit after retirement
If he is traded it will be to a team with a legit chance at the cup it won't be to a team like the Islanders.
what do the Sens get out of this deal? Cap relief?????
AND they have to pay 4th to get a 6th back????
WTF. They are nowhere near to needing cap relief much less having to pay up to get it. Now if they traded Alfie to a team that needed to get up to the floor and got back an asset that could play for the Sens, maybe. But only for cap relief? Oooh boy.
PRetty much. This has Jason York's stream of conscicousness (possibly drunk) stamp all over it. I can see him now: "Derr, we trade Alfie so we get an asset back den he doesn't play and retires a Senator. Let's talk about Tootsie's in Nashville!"
