I keep reading that the CBJ may not sign him to an ELC. Seeing his numbers and seeing his awards in the CHL make me scratch my head on why we wouldn't at least give him a shot. Yes, he was horrible on Halifax, and SJ is a powerhouse. But with the lack of goaltending talent in Columbus, why wouldn't we sign him?

Well hopefully no one with the CBJ is judging him by his time in Halifax, he was young, backstopping some pretty weak teams and basically got fed to the wolves alot. He was improving every year, and certainly saw a lot of rubber so that's probably helped him in the long run.

Hopefully he gets a deal done, he's a nice guy, my son worked with him at a few goalie camps and was pretty impressed with his attitude.

Good frame, good experience, but he's got lots of work to do in the minors.

I've personally met him, he's neighbors with my friend and I got to talk to him a couple of times, he's a nice kid, but didn't talk much. There was a rumor around the neighborhood that it seemed like he wasn't taking his hockey career too seriously since he got a gf.

6'6 and back-to-back Memorial Cup appearance (once as a backup, now as a starter)?

You gotta sign this kid up and see what he can do in the minors...

He'll probably start in the ECHL... and go from there. Columbus has nothing to lose here.

SJ is a powerhouse, but they're giving plenty of scoring chances, they are playing a lot more of a run and gun than a trap. I would also give him a contract.

This, last year Desserres won them that Mem cup, he was spectacular when needed.

De Serres was mental. Corbeil should be signed, I don't know why they shouldn't.

I don't agree with using the current state of goaltenders with the Blue Jackets (using four goalies at the pro level last year, having three goalies heading to unrestricted free agency) as an argument for signing Corbeil.

If anything, I think the opposite. I think teams should give NHL contracts to prospects they feel can become NHL players. I think it is entirely realistic to believe that Columbus might not have that belief in Corbeil.

It's irrelevant what the goalie situation is in Columbus or whether Corbeil is possibly their "best" goalie prospect outside of pro hockey right now. If they don't think he can be an NHL player and if they don't think he can improve the goalie situation in Columbus, there's no point to signing him.

It's not a case of "why not" and "it can't hurt", it's a case of properly judging and utilizing resources available. If they don't think he's got it, why would they sign him?

He plays for the Seadogs. That team was so dominant all season, that they could have put a cardboard cut-out of a goalie in the crease and the cutout would have had a GAA of under 3.

What makes you say that? I've met him in person and he seems like a cool guy. Not trying to sound all defensive, just honestly wondering why you say that?

I'm assuming he meant mental as "out of his mind"
Like when the kids used to say "bad" and it meant good.

Ah, definitely possible. I just read it real quick and probably misinterpreted it.

I didn't think he was bad here in Halifax, actually. The team in front of him sure was, though. Big and has a good glove. Surely there's a spot, in the ECHL at least, for a guy like him.

The kid is so damn raw. You can see it in the way he moves and plays the game. He needs a ton of work, but there is waaaay too much to like about him to not sign him.

If this 6'6 19 year old kid goes unsigned, some team with room will gladly snap him up and mold him into something useable. Imagine what the Preds could do with him if he was in their system?

^^ THIS. No harm in a kid needing to develop<shrug>. Of all places, G is something that CBJ should sign.

Corbeil will turn 21 in September. He has played 4 seasons in the Q.

The question is why he's so raw and why his game needs so much work after that much time developing.

Probably fair to say that the taller you grow, the longer it takes to get used to your body. Jason Missiaen is another guy going through the same kind of thing, and ups and downs considered he's still improving, too.

- Time to grow into your body and work on your strength and co-ordination.

- The likely lack of a true, proper goalie coach. That's something he would get in an NHL team's system.
