The IIHF Rankings & Olympic Qualification

As of today, here are the best & worst case scenarios for each nation:

Gold to 8th (1000 -1200)- Russia, Canada, Finland, Sweden,
Gold to 10th ( 940 - 1200)- Czech Republic
Gold to 12th ( 900 - 1200)- USA
Gold to 13th ( 880 - 1200)- Slovakia
Gold to 14th ( 860 - 1200)- Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Latvia, France
11th to 16th ( 820 - 920)- Belarus
13th to 16th ( 820 - 880)- Denmark, Italy, Kazakhstan

Top 9 in IIHF rankings qualify automatically for the Olympics
Already qualified: Russia, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic
Virtually qualified: USA
Cannot qualify: Belarus, Denmark, Italy, Kazakhstan
Need Gold & a lot of help: France
Need to make SF & a lot of help: Latvia

Which leaves:
Switzerland (1990), Germany (1985), Norway (1960), Slovakia (1940)

A regulation win for Slovakia over Switzerland on Sunday will mean that Slovakia will gain at least 20 points on the Swiss.
A regulation win for Norway over Germany on Sunday means that Norway will gain at least 20 points on Germany.

When you say "cannot qualify," you mean cannot automatically qualify in the top nine, correct? There's still the qualification system for the teams ranked 10-27 next year.

If Slovakia gains wins of loses in OT against France, they qualify automatically for the Olympics. If they finish 9th & Germany finishes lower than 10th, they qualify.

If Germany finishes 9th, 10th or 11th, they qualify.

Switzerland will qualify as long as they finish above Germany; or in this scenario: Slovakia 9th, Germany 10th, Switzerland 11th.

How are the rules of home ice advantage in the qualification? Can you take that into account. Otherwise: Great job!

One of Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland will be 10th. If France doesn't win a medal, that is. Here is the battle: Belarus (1845), Denmark (1830), Latvia (1825), France (1700).
Here are the possible point totals for each:
France (2640-2900)
Latvia (2685-2785)
Denmark (2650-2770)
Belarus (2665-2725)

If France wins Gold, they can move up to 8th, 9th or 10th. With Silver, 10th or 11th. With Bronze or 4th, 11th. With 7th or 8th, they will be 13th or 14th in the rankings. If they don't make the QF they will be 14th

Since Kazakhstan is currently being relegated as I write, Belarus can finish 13th or 14th, putting them at 2705 or 2725 points. They must finish ahead of Latvia or Denmark or they will fall to 13th in the rankings.

If Denmark finishes ahead of Latvia & Belarus, they move to 11th.

If Latvia finishes ahead of Denmark & Belarus, they move to 11th.

Belarus can still finish 16th and being relegated if they lost their last game and Kazahkstan and Italy win their last game.

I know it's highly unliky because Kazahkstan will play against Finland but you speak about the points France would get if they win the gold and I think that Belarus being relegated is more likely to happen than France winning the gold even if the chance is damn low.

Correct. Had Belarus beaten France by one goal in regulation yesterday, a 3-way tie would have left Switzerland in 13th. And Germany, losing their last 2 games 20-5 would have qualified for the Olympics.

Are you sure about that?
Aren't the rankings behind the teams that qualify for the quarterfinals done by the amount of points and not the rank they got in the group stage?
In that case, Switzerland still would have finished ahead of Germany because of a better goals differential, even if they had only finished 7th in their group to Germany's 6th place.

From the IIHF:
Quote:
The eliminated teams from the preliminary round plus the losing teams of the quarter-finals will be ranked following their positions in the groups preceding the quarter-final round.

The final ranking will follow the following procedure:

1. Higher position in the group,
2. Higher number of points
