Derek 'the Boogieman' Boogaard, passed away one year ago...

Last year, Derek Boogaard passed away in what was the start of a very tragic summer for the NHL. When everything settled down; three NHL players and one KHL team left us and made us question the violence, the evolution, and the safety of the game.

Not only that but sports in general have been grappling with what the NHL is fighting with. How to make the game safer for the players but still keep the spirit and the passion for the sport alive?

Football has been wrestling with this problem for a few years now and in the wake of Junior Seau's death, a lot more questions need to be asked and a lot harder answers need to be brought up.

I think May 13th should be a day of not only remembrance but of celebration, where players realize there is more to life than just hockey and hopefully they go out and seek help.

You think the Rangers might lobby to get his name on the Cup if they happen to win it?

Ok, very nice post, and absolutely, they need to figure out how these concussions are leading to the deaths of these people, but I'm confused how the KHL team, god rest their souls, and their tragic accident, has anything to do with the overall message of your post?

Russia clearly has severe problems with safety standards that need to be looked at. Yet another plane went down over there just this past week, but this isn't a problem releated to the NHL.

I'm not sure how they could possibly lobby to have Boogaard on the cup. He played 22 games for the organization.

Nice thought.. would never happen.

I don't see that as even a remote possibility.

The Rangers definitely wouldn't try to get his name on it. It sucks he died, but for the very short time he was here, he wasn't good at all. Even on-ice stuff aside, he was only on the team for a season, and not on the IR for like three months.

He'll always be one of my favorite players.

Sorry Rangers fans, but I'll always remember him as a member of the Wild.

I don't think they would, but I do think they would donate a cup ring to his family if they were to win.

Can't believe it's already been a year. This was the start of the worst offseason I've ever seen. Boogaard, then Rypien, the Belak, then Lokomotiv. Still makes me very sad to this day.

R.I.P.

I think it's a message that while the KHL might be a good alternative, they still have a long ways to go.

If the Rangers tried to get his name on the cup, I feel like they might as well push for Cherepanov too.

Maybe they would had Boogaard died this year instead of last year. But Boogaard passed away before this season even started, so I don't see him getting put on the cup as even a remote possibility.
