No one is denying that. I do think he will be one of the elites in the NHL some day though. The kids skating ability is flawless. His positioning is outstanding. Hockey sense through the roof. I guess the only "knock" on his game is that he isn't a 60 point defenseman like Doughty or Weber. However it is appropriate to note that of his 32 points I think 28 or 29 of them are even strength points. He never sees power play time.

Trade him for Rick Nash. We need the offense.

If he continues playing like this defensively but also had more offensive talent, he'd probably be a perennial Norris candidate.

Guy would be tremendous if he had a bomb from the point.

having McDonaugh and Staal as the top two LD is a huge reason why this team is so good.

not to mention Del Zotto starts off LD and plays PP. Then switches to RD late in games. Teams stacked with youth.

If Erixon and McIlrath can develop the D is crazy good for the next 5 yrs plus

I shouldnt have opened this thread. I think im going to cry

Timmins wanted to keep McDo with the Habs but Gainey and Gauthier overruled him. They should be hunted down and slapped with a wet noodle for this. Absolutely terrible.

That said the Rangers have a great defensive corp. Young , mobile and dynamic. Not to mention the goalie to back them up. They are in a pretty good position for now and the future.

Sather went up to Gordie Clark I believe and asked who he wanted and he said he wanted McDonagh from the Habs. Surprisingly, Sather pulled a rabbit out of his hat and got McDonagh.

I still cannot figure out this trade went down. I wonder what Gomez is up to right now?

I knew when the trade happened that McD was gonna be a good player, but I didn't expect him to be THIS good. Unreal how much of a steal this trade was..

McD-Subban pair on the Habs would have been one of the best in the NHL for years.

When Sather realized he had a shot at making the deal, he went to Director of player personnel Gordie Clark and asked, "Who should we get?" Both Clark and assistant GM Jeff Gorton had McDonagh No. 1. The Rangers really liked him going back to the NHL combine of his draft year and always kept an eye on him. (He was taken before New York selected the late Alexei Cherepanov.) Who was No. 2 if Montreal said no? "It never got that far," Clark said.

Clark explained how the Rangers (and presumably every other team) keep an updated list of about four/five players from all other organizations they'd target in a deal. "We're not talking about guys like [Steven] Stamkos," he said. "Everybody wants him. It's about prospects or lesser-known players. You watch everyone else's like you watch your own." That way, when Sather needs an answer, he gets one quickly.

Clark added the Rangers liked McDonagh for the same reason they noticed Chris Kreider and Dylan McIlrath at their combines. "Physically, it was like men amongst boys," he said. "You have to be careful to make certain they have the hockey sense to play the way they need to, but they really stood out."

Agreed. And .... If Sauer is ever able to recover from PCS the potential here is ridiculous.

I think my mom can score more goals than Gomez. And she never held a stick before.

Ryan McDonagh
Drafted: 2007 round 1 #12 overall by Montréal Canadiens

2009/06/30 New York Rangers traded Scott Gomez, Tom Pyatt and Mike Busto to the Montreal Canadiens for Christopher Higgins, Ryan McDonagh, Doug Janik and Pavel Valentenko.

Ouch!
