Bettman "Original 12"

http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/79...ght-new-owners

Quote:
"We know the future is extraordinarily bright," said Bettman, who referred to the Blues as a member of the NHL's "Original 12" franchises. "The balance sheet looks much, much better, much, much stronger.
The frickin wut? Bettman, words can't even be equated right now. If you ever were to try and push an original 12... my god...

I don't get why this is a big deal but I tend to laugh at people who cling to the "Original six" like it means something anyway.

Original 12 is as accurate as Original Six. No big deal.

Are all of our teams a part of the "Origional 30"?

Oh, no! He called the St. Louis Blues an "Original 12" team, when talking to partisan fans of that team. How dare he pander to local fans, just like every other leadership person ever everywhere.

Every term had to be coined at some point. Even "Original Six".

It's funny that of the "Expansion Six", there's only four remaining.

California moved to Cleveland, and then merged with Minnesota, and then Minnesota moved to Dallas, and then kind of half split into the Sharks.

I think it's funny. ~Everyone~ has heard of the Original Six, though obviously some of our friends try to downplay what it signifies, and to varying extents it signifies nothing or something--- depending on your perspective.

No one has heard of the Original Twelve until today. Thanks, Gary!

Sure, but the usage of some terms sticks, while we make fun of the others.

So the correct term Gary should have used would have been.... Original 8?? Mebbe.

I've lost track which is kinda bad since I was alive when it started (the expansions).

This should get him elected to the Builders category in the HHOF...

I don't think that he cares if the term sticks or doesn't - he was talking to pro-St. Louis folks and wanted to pander. Just like every other sports commissioner that there's ever been.

He does that a lot, the pandering, eh?

Now honestly. St. Louis fans don't need this type of pandering. Their team has been in St. Louis far longer than Gary's been the commish, and probably far longer than most everyone who will post in this thread. He's the commissioner of the NHL. Why's he introducing a term that takes off one that actually IS used but in some ways is a divisive term when you mix certain fan bases. He should know better.

Why not? We know many of those selections were pandering to certain power brokers but not necessarily the most deserving 'buiders'.

I can't think of a sports commissioner who didn't pander.

It's not a particularly unclever term - if someone said it around here, it'd probably get a chuckle and people would move on.

I don't even see how it's pandering. That's like saying calling the Leafs an original 6 team while in Toronto is also pandering.

How are the Blues not one of the 12 original teams in the modern NHL, OP?

I kind of think of it as the Original 21, since all those teams existed before I was born anyway...
