This season only, almost.

Careers, absolutely not.

Smith has had a pretty weird course to the top. He looked awesome in Dallas and was a rising star there, gets traded to Tampa where he is really good before he gets concussed. After the concussion he seems to be off, and that causes him to gradually lose all confidence in himself. I think having Phoenix believe in him, and having Sean Burke help him has been an absolute blessing. He absolutely has all the physical gifts to be one of the best 'tenders in the league.

Dude is in the absolute zone. That said, one season doesn;t equate to elite, imo. He's always had the talent just zero consistency until now. Time will tell.

I'd actually agree. LA is finally picking up their fair share of the workload, and Quick hasn't done nearly as much.

Smith is one of the main reasons Phoenix is still around.

Is Halak an elite goalie up with quick, Thomas, and lundqvist?
There is your answer.
My opinion is no until he proves me next year and probably the year after.

This season only? It's hard to argue that he's not.

We'll see if he still is for the rest of his career.

Yeah, no. This is nothing but noodles trying to play up a pre-this-season career back up goalie, much like himself.

Once players figure Smith out, he'll come down to earth, next year.

It also helps that he's playing in the west, which has always been a more defense first conference.

None of those 3 have really been elite for 5 years straight except Lundy.

You know, one other thing that I find funny is Quick being lumped in with Thomas and Lundy. He's been good for the past 2 years, but it wasn't until this year that he was really ever "elite".

Smith is one of the best puckhandling goalies in the league...

I really like that about him. I think it's an underestimated aspect of goaltending.

That said, it's true for any position, but especially for goalies: a good season doesn't make a career and history has made most hockey fans very weary of amazing seasons that came out of nowhere (same for Elliott in St-Louis).

The biggest challenge for goalies is to put up great numbers regardless who plays in front of them and who is their coach. If Smith can put up similar numbers for the next few years, he should absolutely be regarded as one of the best, not only because he can goal, but because of his puckhandling abilities.

I disagree. A lot of pivotal goals in the Nashville series were a result of him getting too cocky with the puck.

If he keeps this play up for the next decade, yes.

Cinderella season/run until proven otherwise. He's been a lousy starter/solid back-up to this point in his career...it takes a lot more than one season to enter 'elite' status.

The inconsistency atop goaltending position these days just blows my mind. Marc-Andre Fleury is somehow second amongst active goalies in playoff wins at the ripe old age of 27.
