Is Bryz Just Another Flyers Goalie?

Or is he a big improvement over guys like Robert Esche, Niitymaki, Biron, etc? How about Leighton? Never understood why he was basically shown the front door. How about Bobrovsky?

THey could be such a dangerous team if they had a goalie like Lundqvist or Quick or Rinne. Everyone thought Bryz would be just that...

The point is not everyone can have a player like Lundqvist or Quick or Rinne. Someone has to settle for the Dan Cloutiers of the world. You have to build a team in front when you don't have an elite goalei that can make up for it like the wings did with Osgood. The flyers "as a team" were knocked out of the playoffs, Bryz is a better goalie then the last majority that have rolled through the flyers net, not good enough to warrent that contract IMO but better none the less. Overpayment for a "good" goalie that is great at times just like Ozzy. The trick was wings always only payed 2 or 3 million for their starter which left cap to build outward. In the end I think its the contract that will be the make or break of Bryz legacy.

The problem is not the goalies, it is the Flyers' style of playing/philosphy. Any goalie would be exposed in the Flyers' system. A Mike Smith in a Flyers' jersey would be the version that was playing in Dallas or Tampa, not in Phoenix.

Flyers' hockey is entertaining, but not a style that is going to win any Cups.

The definition of insanity comes to mind when it comes to the Flyers' approach to goaltenders.

Well yes, Bryzgalov is another Flyers goalie. What a silly question.

I love watching the Flyers (Diehard Rangers fan here) and James Van Reimsdyke is from my county in New Jersey so I kinda want them to win the Cup so I can see him bring it home here. Also LOVE Dany Briere.

If they put a first rate defense in front of him he'll do well.

Our defense is great, it's just injuries that were a big problem. If our defense could stay healthy, Bryz would have had much less to deal with on the ice.

No, he's not a Flyers goalie....that means Pens shoulda won that series, playing an unsigned goalie...ok, it's time to start round 2 all over again! Pens in, Flyers out.

Spot on. No goalie stands a chance on the Flyers with that system. The only chance the Flyers had if the goalie stood on his head throughout the playoffs.

Give him time, he's a big improvement over the previous scrubs.

Losing a defenseman like Pronger kinda makes a difference.

He's a somewhat better playing and extravagantly better paid Flyers goalie.

Well, okay, he's much better than Nittymaki, but he's not 4-5 million dollars better than Biron.

Is this post even remotely relevant to the topic at hand?

OT: I'd say bryz is better than that list, but not significantly so.

I think because he made the thread he was adding on that information to show it wasn't made with bad intent. Especially being a Rangers fan the topic could of have been taken the wrong way.

Yes he is better than than Esche, Nitty, Biron, etc. How much better he is, is open to debate and his future performances, but I can say fairly confidently that he is better. Leighton might be the worst of the recent Flyers goalies you mentioned, he just happened to get hot at the right time (you know up until the SCF). I never had any faith in him, and he showed me I was right not too. Bob has some talent, but he's not ready to be more than a back up right now and he might never be more than that (that said I do like him).

Well yes almost any team would be better with Lundqvist, Quick, or Rinne since they're probably the best three goalies in the NHL this season (respect to Smith but same team/system that Bryz looked so good in). Personally I didn't think Bryz would 'be that'. My preference in the off season would have been to get Vokoun for two or three years to let Bob (or another prospect) develop and then take over (or address the need in FA if it didn't pan out. Seeing how he played this year and all not sure that would have worked out much better in the season, but hindsight. To be fair Bryz and trouble adapting the the intense pressure that comes with the big contract and spot light of being a Flyers goalie. Near the end of the season he seemed to finally figure it out and was on of the best in the league for 5 or 6 weeks. Unfortunately, in the second to last game of the season he got injured (bone chip in his foot), and never really got back in his grove after that. He was mediocre for the most part in round 1, and pretty good in round two other than a major failure on the Clarkson goal in the final game. There are no promises, but if he really did figure out 'how' to play in Philadelphia and he recovers from the bone chip with an improved/healthy Flyers the potential is there for him to put up above average numbers, but only time will tell.

Yes. He's a more inconsistent Martin Biron.

I don't like judging players by the first season in a new place with a big contract. Let's see how he does next year.

This. He is better than most of the goalies listed, but he's only marginally better than Biron.

Bryz is the one facing the firing squad all the while his defense didn't make his job remotely easy. He certainly has his weaknesses but he's not the only reason why the Flyers' off season has already started.
