Different idea : Try one of our F prospects as a D

Since we have a glut of F prospects now, and need Dmen in the system after Cowen and Karlsson, what about trying one of our forward prospects as a Dman? If we draft a Dman in the draft this year, and one of our prospects fits well as a Dman, throw in a UFA signing, and our D could be set for years. And since Cowen and Karlsson could (or are in Karlsson's case) be top pairing guys, its not like this drafted and converted prospect would have to handle the heavy lifting in terms of ice time or playing against other teams' top lines. This could kill 2 birds with one stone, since we don't have enough forward spots really for all these prospects (certainly not top 6 spots), and we have a need on the back end. What do you all think?

Also, which of our forward prospects do you think would be most likely to be able to make a move to the backend?

Hmm, not sure. In any case, he's a forward now. Wonder how he'd do as a defensive Dman.

dude, if we wanted a d we would draft a d or trade for one. Making someone switch would be idiotic.

Jim O'Brien was indeed drafted as a defenseman, but pretty much the first words to him from the Senators after he was drafted were "you're a forward now" so I doubt they would be interested in switching him back.

This is something you do in Minor Peewee, not the NHL.

Trade or FA is by far the better idea. I really think this is one of the most stupid ideas. It fails more than it works.

It is a joke from your side but I am for it. he has great passes from own zone and only he and yashin stayed right in the position and when he played in pk in russia he played very good and effective.

and still job imo

I think Carkner used to be a forward................

so lets keep him at D and just go sign a UFA dman

Grow up and talk like an adult. Its not unheard of, as others have mentioned, other players, like Carkner, have played both in the NHL. And its not a stupid idea. It solves our glut of F prospects issue, and if you successfully convert one and sign a UFA Dman, boom, you now have a set of top 4 Dmen with Karlsson and Cowen.

If you don't like the idea, try arguing and back up your opinion. Don't call it stupid with nothing to back it up, and take your ball and go home like a child.

Lol calm down.

I'm not saying the idea is horrible and I think it's fine that you make a thread about it. All the power to you.

But I don't think it's the right thing to do, and I told you why.

Don't get too upset because a poster on the Internet disagrees with a radical idea. Calling someone out for being a child seems like the response of someone who has no better response to say.

I'm saying that there are far easier options to get ourselves a defenseman. I also freaking listed prospects and that they wouldn't fit, so you're argument about lack of facts is unfounded. If that gets you angry than I think it's pretty darn ironic what you say about ME being childish.

If we had a versatile person like Byfuglien or Schubert in the organization, I'd try it... it seems to me that the guys we have all have pretty specific skillsets though.

Exactly. I listed some of our top prospects and NONE fit the bill .

Plain and simple.

I really think you're better off trading one of our forward prospects for a defenceman.

People can cite Brent Burns as one instance of the transition being successful, but over the history of the league it has ruined countless careers. We almost did it to Chris Phillips.

Few things to clear up:

- Jim O'brien was not a D when drafted, he had played D until freshman in high school and coaches at Minnesota University at the time considered switching him back (until he left for Junior). http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/...b-ec33359c77d3

- Also, Matt Carkner was always a D, except for a few games where he was inserted as a 4th line agitator

None of our prospects are capable of this. Yes, a few players can do it, IE Federov, Kapanen for short stints in a bind.

How about Culek? He is used on a shutdown line in Rimouski. Being a Center he should have some kind of vision for the first pass too.
Kramer could also develop into a better Carkner.
