@TSNBobMcKenzie: WSH GM George McPhee may wait as late as July or August to find his replacement for departed head coach Dale Hunter. He's in no hurry.

Super-dee-duper.

You can have an identity without having a coach hired, but you sure as heck better have a definite list of final candidates that you know are going to carry it out. I really wouldn't understand waiting *that* long to make the hire.

Well, that's unexpected, and indicative that it won't be an active July 1st for the team.

Then again, it could mean that they've already got a hire pending, and it'll be announced soon.

I seriously, seriously doubt this is true. I'm sure that's what McPhee said to Mackenzie, but it's utterly illogical. I could certainly see him waiting a month or more, but they'll have a coach by July 1.

In a sense it's good there's no high-end candidates because they'd probably take their sweet ass time regardless and not even be interested in them.

He hasn't had the pulse of this team since he came to town

Neo GM as he knows there's a lockout coming. Saving money. Why pay a coach for nothing?

I really don't see any reasoning for that long of a wait. I'd get waiting until the playoffs are over. But even then, it's moronic to not at least do all your leg work, background checks, etc. It's not like any new candidates are going to emerge over the summer.

If McKenzie is basing this off of GMGM's presser he said maybe by the draft but maybe not until August like NJ did last summer with DeBoer.*

* DeBoer was hired on 7/19.

Its for this reason that I don't think GMGM will wait that long to find a HC. Rather GMGM find a coach, then get players in FA to fit the HC's system then the other way around.

So you are totally on to something!

Let all the UFAs walk. Leave the coaching job empty. Bank all the money we would have paid our striking stars and then...

....the 2013 UFA class is ALL OURS.... AHHHH HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Who out there would be considered the next DeBoer? Good coach from a bad team that gets a shot with a legit playoff contender?

And has Bob Hartley been mentioned? Just read his name in a next Caps HC speculation blog post.

I tend to agree its close. Varly had to deal with horrible depth, overworked injured stars getting max TOI, and a cross check to the head. Holtby had to deal with minimal goal support from a team stuck in transition to a team based defense first game.

Varly's support was, Ovi go outscore Sid k thanks. While he does have the meltdown on his resume, I think all Caps fans saw him starting to break down in games 5 and 6 and I contend he should have been replaced with our number 1 all year, Theo. He was left out to dry after saving our bacon.

I can't recall... was NJ very active in FA last summer? If not, matters less, I think.

This was the best post in the thread:

Anyway...some of the candidates that have been mentioned here seem pretty horrible. If McLellan or Laviolette is fired, or Tippet is loosed by a moving franchise, those are obviously far and away the top candidates. I guess McLellan is the only one of those remotely likely to become available. Aside from that, approaching the issue with limited knowledge, Maurice and Eakins would probably be my top choices. Hartley and Sutter seem like interesting possibilities...and I guess MacTavish. The interest in him always seems to be primarily based on people thinking he's cool. Did you guys know he was the last NHL player to play without a helmet?

I think Mike Haviland's name was mentioned by one person in the whole thread. He shouldn't be discounted, in my opinion. His firing in Chicago, from everything I've read about it, should not influence people against him. Anyway, as people have said, that absolute most important, ****ing utterly crucial thing is that they actually have a hiring process. Make it a big ****ing deal and actually approach the whole thing methodically and analytically. My faith in McPhee to do this is extremely limited right now. He may not have enough time for it anyway, with spending the next couple of months trying to figure out how they beat Boston.

I think Marc Crawford would be a good fit for Washington.

He seems to be able to get a lot out of offensive minded players (Brad Richards' numbers bounced back big time in Dallas, Sakic/Naslund/Bertuzzi all had their career best numbers under Crawford).

If they want to stick to a more defensive style though Craig Mactavish might not be a bad option.

He allows offensive players leeway to do their thing (see: Ales Hemsky in Edmonton) but can coach that "playoff grind" style to a tee (see: 2006 Cup run).

They did nothing IINM. They signed Sykora & Bernier after inviting them to camp and that's it.

You know that famous youtuber, i thought it got him pretty good on the side of the head.

What do you think the initial point of contact was? I think its temple/ear > neck.

Can you believe he didnt get suspended for that? I did what I could.

George implying he wants to wait tells me he has already decided on the style we will play next year. Regardless of the coach. Common sense would tell me that he should know what style we will play before delving into FA this summer.

That tells me he will dictate the style we will bring. Semin out, Kuz out - I know what I am preparing for.... perhaps only Ted seeing renewals down can force him to go offensive.
