This would help the cap but I would hate for him to go out like that. I would really like him to stay in the organization along with Roli.

Well, even though I've been assuming for a while now that he won't be able to play again, it still sucks to read.

I really hope he can recover at least enough to not feel pain anymore.

This article seems a bit dated - its all stuff we already know, the surgery could force him into retirement, etc... but doesn't seem to expressly say "i'm retiring". It actually says in there he still wants to play.

While we know this is not official by any means, I dont think this would shock anyone. It is a shame that this happened to a great guy like Ohlund. To go out in this manner is just a total shame. I really hope he can heal enough to have a normal life off the ice. Maybe he can open a restaurant on Channelside as part of Vinik's plan to purchase Channelside

The only positive is that would free up around 3 million in cap for the bolts to pursue an experienced top tier defender to help rally the young guys.

While a story on a Swedish newspaper site Tuesday set off speculation Mattias Ohlund is retiring, the veteran Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman said he hopes to be able to play again.
Quote:
Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said Tuesday he has held no discussions with Ohlund regarding the defenseman retiring before next season.

These articles doesn't say he is going to retire, they just say that he might have to due to the injury but that he will give it a go, if it doesn't work, well then he have to retire. So nothing new really.

Ohlund wants to come back:
Quote:
Every now and then, Mattias Ohlund admitted, he ponders the possibility his career might be over. (...)

"When you're younger, I might have looked at guys my age and in my situation and said, 'Why does he not just quit?' " a sweaty Ohlund said Friday between workouts at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

"But when you get older, you realize this is truly a blessing to be in this game. … I want to give myself another chance to play, and I'm hoping that's going to happen, but who knows?"
If ever - it will take time:
Quote:
"With replacements of the surfaces of the knee, you usually would not see an individual going back to high-risk, high-contact sports of a professional nature," [orthopedic surgeon] Griffin said. "Certainly, hockey is one of the worst for falling and injuring body limbs, and it's a very intense sport for the patellofemoral joint because it's all done off a bent knee." (...)

Considering Ohlund did not do much the first six weeks after surgery, he is in the earliest stages of what [Lightning assistant athletic trainer] Poirier said will be a "very slow process," with no guarantee Ohlund will be skating by training camp in September.
SFY:
Quote:
Said general manager Steve Yzerman, "He's a proud guy, he's a pro, and he's doing everything he can to get back."

Even so, Yzerman said, "I'm not expecting him to start the season healthy. I suppose it's possible, but we're planning accordingly."
