They had Mike Smith not to long ago. The team has no depth up front and has poor defense. If you have players signed to huge contracts, they better perform. And Lecavalier doesn't seem to anymore.

Something surprising will have to go right for them to jump into contention.

Yeah, they just need a surge with some potential that has the capacitance to be the source for that spark. Perhaps a big trade to start a new phase for the organization? That seems to be a natural response, which hopfully, won't be met with a great deal of impedance from those who don't like to see such a large transformation.
