I kind of caught one of their D sleeping a little bit. (Voynov) put it right on my tape.” (on whether Jonathan Quick said anything to the team during the first intermission…) “No, he didn’t say much. Quicker, he doesn’t really talk a lot. He makes 25 big saves a game and he don’t say anything after those. He lets one in that he probably wants back, he just put his head down and got back to work. There were one or two saves that were pretty remarkable in the third (period). One on the blocker’s side (with), I don’t know, four or five minutes left in the third. That definitely saved the game for us. He’s one of those guys, he gets right back at it and doesn’t let it affect him.” (on expecting a push-back against his line in Game 2…) “It’s just like pretty much any series. You get that first game out of the way, start looking at film, tendencies. I’m not sure what they’re going to try to do to (try to) stop us. It’s one of those things where they’re going to make adjustments. It’s up to us, as players, to make adjustments in games to be effective and have an impact on Game 2.” (on whether the Kings were frustrated, being tied after two periods…) “No. We knew coming in, you watch Phoenix play, they got a really good goaltender. Part of our thing is getting as many shots on him as we can, make him work, make it hard for him. The more saves he has, the chances for us winning go up. On the flip side, we understand they’re a very opportunistic team. They’ve won games in this playoffs getting 10 shots, 12 shots. They are very patient, very opportunistic. They get a chance off the forecheck, it’s 2-2, (but) that didn’t change our mindset. I think we’re pretty well aware of how opportunistic they are.” (on whether it was nerve-wracking to be a tight game like that…) “(It’s) one of those things where, at this time of year, you’ve got to just stick with the game plan, execute. Things will fall into place if you work hard. It’s one of those things where, we’ve got to keep going with the type of offensive threats we had tonight. We had a lot of shots, a lot of traffic. They’re going to get chances. That’s part of the game. That’s why we have a goalie, as well. We’ve just got to keep on making it hard on Smith. The longer they play in their D zone, the more tired they’re going to get. Over the course of the series, that’s going to be to our advantage."

It’s a lucky bounce. Those things happen.” (on his teammates picking him up after that…) “It was a team effort. We all worked hard, and it’s just one. This one is over with. We’re focused on (Game) 2 now. We’re focused on Game 2; that’s it.” (on taking a 1-0 lead in the series…) “It’s always important. Every game is important. If you look at both us and Phoenix, this postseason, we both won Game 1 in each of the first two rounds. They know how important it is, and so do we. But it means nothing if we don’t win Game 2.” (on Mikkel Boedker’s goal…) “They came in on the forecheck and he got in pretty hard there and he made a good play.” (on whether he felt rusty at all, after the long layoff…) “No, no.’’ (on whether he would have preferred to see more shots early…) “Either way. Every game brings its own challenges, whether you get a lot of work or you don’t get a lot of work. Either way, it’s going to have its own challenge.’’ (on staying so calm after a big game…) “But we’re not where we want to be. We’ve got goals here in this locker room, and we’re not where we want to be. We know we can be better here, and it’s a new game on Tuesday, so that’s all we’re focused on."

The first five minutes, I thought we dominated. That was our main focus coming into it. To get this first one out of the way, and have this win, is huge.’’ (on the speed of the game…) “I thought everyone on the team was skating. We had that long break, and everyone was so anxious to get started. Everyone bursted out all their energy that we had saved up, into tonight’s game, and I thought everyone was flying. One thing we have to make sure we’re doing is tape-to-tape plays. When we weren’t doing that, that’s the only time we ran into troubles.’’ (on Mikkel Boedker’s goal…) “It’s a tough one. I was telling him to set up the puck for me the way he did. It just happened that the guy got in between Quickie and the net and cut me off. I wish I could have maybe rimmed the puck or something like that. I don’t know what I should have done with it, but it was kind of a tough play and the guy did a good job on the forecheck. Next time, I’ve definitely got to do something with the puck and not let that happen."

We were putting everything on net. It was part of the game plan.’’ (on the play of his line…) “Well, I mean you’ve got to be in a good position, all over the ice, to get the puck back. Then once we get it, obviously first we want to make sure we keep it and make possession plays. Sometimes you’ve got to chip it. Sometimes you can get in with clear possession. After we get it, it’s just a matter of guys making plays.’’ (on the importance of his line setting a tone early…) “It’s always important. Tonight, I think all four lines did a really good job. It was a great team effort. We can enjoy this one tonight and get back at it tomorrow.’’ (on the team’s attitude after Morris’ red-line goal…) “I think we just felt we had to get a couple for Quickie. He has bailed us out all season, and a few times in the playoffs too. I don’t think anybody was concerned or worried about it. We just looked at each other and said, `Maybe we should win this one for him.’’ (on whether Dustin Brown is playing his best hockey of the year…) “I think he’s playing the best hockey since I’ve been here, six years. I think he realizes that we need him to play like that in order to be successful. Right now, he’s clicking on the ice and he’s making plays. He’s getting the bounces, but he’s scoring the big goals obviously. That’s what good captains and good leaders do."
Originally Posted by Forward JARRETT STOLL, on Rebounding from Derek Morris’ red-line goal :

Tough goal to give up. On the bench, we were fine. On the ice, we were fine. We kept pushing and pushing. We knew we were playing our game for the most part there, great shifts. Just kept staying positive. We all know, on our team, that wasn’t going to beat us. That’s just the way we played.” (on the growth of Dwight King…) “Yeah, he’s a strong guy. He’s very smart, too. He thinks the game well. With me, him and (Trevor) Lewis, we’re on the same page defensively, trying to turn over pucks. He protects the puck so well. He can find the puck and score well. He did it in junior. A lot of people have done it in junior. You come up here, he’s contributed down the stretch in the playoffs. It’s not easy for a young guy coming in to be put in a role like that, be playing an empty-netter in the Western Conference Finals and he’s on the ice. So he’s a big part of our team. (on how much momentum the Kings generate from successful penalty kills…) “Quite a bit. Smart pressure. You can pressure all you want, (but) if you’re not smart with it and you got one guy going and you got two guys sitting back, gaps open up, lanes open up (and) a good power play can pick you apart. We’re all on the same page, moving together, pressuring together. If you get one extra guy in there (on a power play), they’re going to get a shot, a chance. As long as it’s not a grade-A scoring chance, Quickie is going to save those all right.” (on Brown’s game…) “He’s an all-right player, yeah. [laughter] He’s doing it all for us. Both ends of the rink, too. Not just offensively, which is nice, but coming back defensively, being physical, leading by example. He doesn’t say all the rah-rah stuff sometimes, but he definitely speaks on the ice."

Plays the right side, moved the puck, played against the top players.” (on the importance of being aggressive early…) “You know the Coyotes have won both games at home (to start) prior series, right? It was really important we had a good start. It wasn’t so much scoring or any of that stuff. Just make sure we match their start. We were able to overcome a rare bad goal against us (and) have the resilience to stay with it.” (on the Kings’ penalty killing…) “We weren’t very good at it early. We got better as we went along. The key is, stay out of the penalty box. I think there’s a lot that goes into the penalty kill: faceoff, shot blocking, clearing the puck down the ice. It’s a big job against, obviously against these guys, because the way Yandle moves back there and Larsson moves back there. Whitney, then they get the net presence. It’s tough to handle. Then you’ve got to be careful in your clears because Smith moves it back up against the wall.” (on having the trust in Dwight King late in games…) “(I) trust putting everybody out there late in the game.” (on whether he was concerned that Derek Morris’ red-line goal would rattle the team…) “I don’t think it rattled them at all. As I said, it’s a rare bad goal against them. Our team was resilient enough just to play through it. (on Dustin Brown’s play on Anze Kopitar’s goal…) “I think it’s an important play because Kopi scored. Don’t you? [laughter] If he didn’t, you wouldn’t have said anything about it. That line, in the first period, had a lot of good opportunities. Because they scored, it sort of highlights it. But the line was really good in the first period.” (on the team’s mindset after the second period, playing well but tied 2-2 with a lot of shots…) “(It) means we probably had lots of missed opportunities, you know? That’s the way the game is, too. We’ve been on the other side of it, too, where you’re outshot 2-1 and we’re on the other side of it. That’s the way it works some nights.” (on Dustin Brown’s game…) “You know what, the playoffs have been something for him, that he’s taken the next step. That’s the key to it. Right now, he’s a playoff-type player because the game, it’s the way you have to play at playoff times. You think about the intensity, the controlled emotion. Probably…he’d like to have the penalty back in the first period, and he certainly covered his butt good by scoring the game winner.” (on whether the first line is doing its best work of the season…) “I think the lines got good after we were able to play Richards and Carter together. Makes a difference, right? Makes a difference who is playing against who. It’s just another dimension. I don’t think it’s got anything to do with this year. We started at zero tonight, right? Everybody did.” (on Jonathan Quick’s big third-period saves…) “You’ve got to make some big saves at some point to win a hockey game.” (on whether Quick said anything to the team during the first intermission…) “I’m not sure if he did or not. I mean, you’re reloading. I don’t think you can dwell on anything that’s a negative or anything like that. I think you’re getting ready for the next (period)."

I thought their whole team was better than our team. If you like Kopitar’s game, he was a lot of them. We weren’t close in that game. We got beat in every facet of the game. I felt like our execution was so poor… I bet you there was between 25 and 30 shots that they got in the game, or attempted in the game — and early was a lot of it — that we had the puck on our stick and it ended up on their stick and a shot in the net. The execution, and the will to get things done — is going to have to improve greatly if we’re going to have a chance in this series. As the playoffs go on, the bar gets higher and higher. You have some players that can rise with the bar, and we didn’t have enough guys rise with the bar tonight. We had some games like this, but not to the point where we got out-competed as bad as we did. … I’m worried about our team."

NOTE : Regarding LARGE SIZE IMAGES / YELLOW RE-SIZE IMAGE BARS ABOVE PICS, let me offer up one nice little suggestion ...
This will get rid of those pesky yellow resize bars over the top of some larger pictures ... as they annoy the hell out of me and maybe they do you also ?
- Go into/click on your "USER CP" {control Panel} up top left in the red bars
- on the left under 'Settings & Options' click on "Edit Options"
- scroll down to 'Thread Display Options', and then 'Please Select the Resize Mode'
- click on the 'Drop Down List Box' over on the Right of 'Please Select the Resize Mode'
- select it to "KEEP ORIGINAL SIZE"
- SAVE your selections !
There ... now don't that look MUCH BETTER

Goals from Penner and Carts.

A few "too many men on ice" calls as the refs say Brown counts as two players.

Williams skates by the Yotes' goal and the incredibly light breeze hits Smith and he freaks out and draws a penalty.

Go Kings! I'm, as always, fired up for the game tonight. Let's keep the roll going, and try and bury the Yotes. GKG!

Only a day between games doesn't give me enough time for gobs of negativity to seep in! That's a good thing, but I'm still nervous. One thing that I'm not worried about is the whole "Don't be satisfied with a road split" mentality. I think it's safe to say this team isn't satisfied in anything, other than winning each and every game. It just goes to show you the growth that's happened over the last few years.

Each series, I've been concerned about the opposite goaltender having an aura of invincibility. I always hoped that the Kings could solve them early in the series and remove that. So far, so good. That's not to say that Smith can't have a great game, but I doubt our guys will be gripping their sticks trying to be too fine with their shot placement. The only goaltender they've faced thus far who had that was Schneider, and he only allowed 4 goals in 3 games, yet still lost 2 out of 3.

Hoping for the best tonight and it would go beyond my wildest expectations to win the first 2 on the road of each series. Keep exceeding them, Kings!

My nerves grow exponentially with each game the Kings get closer to advancing in the playoffs. If we make it to the SCF, I'll be a wreck. Which is funny, considering I wasn't in 93 and I had already been a fan for over 10 years and was 22 years old at the time. I think it was because I was foolish to think that the magical Gretzky ride was just beginning. Now, I truly know how precious these runs are.
