Phil Kessel

Obviously Burke won't be that willing to trade because of everything he gave up for him (See Seguin, Hamilton, Knight), but if there's an opportunity to make the team better, he'll make it. Kessel's a small forward, but he put up 82 points this year in 82 games, so effectively a point per game player. Has been known in the Leafs locker room for stepping up and being a leader (Even if he's not that outspoken to the media).

What offers can you guys put together for the 24 year old?

Some advice. After 39 posts you may think this is fun. Never...ever put a value of Kessel thread up as it is going to become a Kessel bashing "Burke screwed that trade" free for all. Kessel won't be traded and the flaming won't be worth it.

Obviously, that's why I said he won't want to. However, I've heard rumours about deals surrounding Kessel, and while they're all still probably garbage, it isn't impossible. Burke wants truculence!

Hell...i'd love truculence, but not at the cost of the only PPG player we've had in a LONG LONG time.

these Kessel threads are a thrill a minute

but I think a team might offer up

a perennial Norris trophy finalist, perhaps a future Hart/Connie and Ross trophy winner and a guy that's destined to be a irreplaceable cog on a 3rd line

....at least that's what some may say

I think the way to make the Leafs better by trading Kessel is the same way Boston is getting better by trading Kessel.

By that I mean trade him for high picks and/or great prospects.

Teams pay a premium for a guy who can be a player now and will sacrifice some value in the long run. Of course this won't make the Leafs better for at least a couple of years so it is probably not what you are looking for.

I think that if the Leafs aren't prepared to do that then they have to just hang on to Kessel and enjoy what they have.

I think in this day and age, a PPG player doesn't win championships. Look at LAK, PHX, STL, NSH, NYR and other teams like that. While they have 1 high scoring player (Kopitar, Whitney, Backes, Erat, Gaborik), they don't all focus on a PPG player. Not one player on any of those teams had a player with +80 points. They focused on defence and the ability to take the body. ANd they all had great goalies. So I'd rather build from the net out than have a PPG player.

Some examples I can think of (please don't hurt me..)...

-Johansson + 12th overall from Washington? Washington is in a "win now" mode, Kessel would replace the loss of Semin.
-Halak + Oshie (or Tarasenko/Berglund/etc)
-One of the NYR young D (McDonagh, Del Zotto, or Staal) + Kreider

Anyways, I don't know exact value. Just examples of young(ish) players or prospects from teams that could probably use the scoring help and are in a "win now" mode. I tried to make each package worth less than what Seguin/Hamilton would be worth, as obviously Toronto can't expect to receive that kind of return. And any above examples could need tweeking (i.e. Toronto adding a piece).

The first trade is fair. I really don't think St Louis or New York touches those last two deals.
