Console Launch prices

Saw this and thought it would be interesting for everyone:

Are the PS4 and Xbox One really that expensive, historically?
Also, how soon and how much can we expect the new consoles to drop in price?

The thing is they can lower the price on consoles because there are so many more people buying games nowadays. Don't they get royalties for each copy of a game sold for their console? They know that the more consoles in people's houses, even if it's at a loss per system, means more potential money over the span of however many years games will be made.

Also, I don't know much about the 3DO, why was it so expensive? I know the NeoGeo was basically an arcade cabinet which explains the price.

been reading that and honestly it seems to me like it was a beta Xbox: One but I think what made it more expensive is that it was one of the first console to use games on cd's

Also have to consider the hardware too. PS4/XBOne are basically computers in a tiny box. Not nearly as customized.

IIRC, the 360 purchase price at launch initially didnt cover the parts and production costs of it. But the cost of the technology that are used in the system got cheaper over time, and they eventually started earning a profit margin on the system. Im sure it has a lot to do with how they allocate their costs as well.
