Lindy Ruff and Goaltenders - is Miller Burned Out?

If any criticism of Ruff rings true in my mind, it's from those who repeatedly say Lindy Ruff is HORRIBLE at managing goaltenders.

Here we have Enroth basically ruined like so many backups before him. Why? Because Lindy has a very low threshold to hit before he loses all faith in the backup and overuses Miller.

Having an elite goaltender doesn't mean you use him MORE, it just means that you are more guaranteed to get a win when he DOES play.

Noronen fan, I presume?

Miller's been fabulous. The playoff race was tight. Ruff made the right choice in this instance.

Lindy will ride Miller into he ground. Elite doesn't mean indestructible.

Miller should get games off BEFORE fatigue starts kicking in. That way he's regularly fresh, especially if they head into the offseason AND your backup isn't rusty. Other teams do this all the time!

Ruff DOES NOT manage goaltenders well at all.

That's what I meant by "bad at managing goaltenders".

We now have a likely fatigued Miller and a very rusty Enroth.

Nice.

HAHA, I was listening, but I already thought this. They just fired me up enough about it to post.

They were absolutely right about what they said, which is basically what I said.

If there is any valid criticism of Ruff, it's this.

Saturday night at 8, it's Lindy Ruff and the Goaltenders performing their #1 hit: "Holy Moly, Rusty Goalie".

Tickets now available.

I agree in a general sense that his handling of his goaltenders has left a lot to be desired. But in the current situation they had little choice but to try and ride Miller to the playoffs.

True.

You'd have to go back a couple months to fix this problem.

And if we play Enroth and he drops the ball, a thread is started about Ruff not riding the obvious hot hand.

Grumble grumble grumble.

And I wonder who would start that thread

Riding Miller is obvious. Playing Enroth a little more is obvious. Ruff using his backup poorly is obvious.

Not me. I like Enroth. I thought Ruff bailed on him waaaaay too soon.

We have here a series of boards full of obvious statements....depending on who you're talking to.

Enroth doesn't play because he's not that good. I've been saying for a atleast a year and half Enroth will never be anything more than a decent backup, but most Buffalo fans jumped straight to his bandwagon after a few good games (many even said trade Miller because of Enroth). Now that the book is out on Enroth he gets lit up just about every game. Look at his stats since late November. Miller plays because he's a great goalie.

Miller deserved to be between the pipes for nearly every game from Jan. on or whenever the hell this stretch run we've been on started....if it werent for injuries(leading to spotty defense) and what appeared to be his injuries effecting him Miller would have silenced all his doubters alot earlier on as well.

That being said Im still not a Ruff fan...

There are plenty of reasons to criticize Ruff, but this year goatlender management is not one of them. (IMO, of course.)

Miller also sucked when the team in front of him was playing horribly. True, Enroth couldn't save what was basically a half AHL team heading into December.

A classic moment in "Ruff Goalie Management" came in the Detroit game where he pulled Miller... then pulled Enroth...then pulled Miller again. My Lord, that was embarrassing...and said it all as far as Lindy's goalie mindset.

I honestly cannot fathom how some are defending him on what is by far his most obvious shortcumming as a coach.
