Maybe once Bryz's cap hit is higher than the money owed... While they might save a year off, DiPietro's contract is affordable at 4.5m each year (till 20-21). The money paid out is almost the same, just in the short term DiPietro is easier for a budget team to deal with.

cap hit: 5.66
12-13 6.5
13-14 8.0
14-15 6.0
15-16 6.0
16-17 5.5
17-18 5.5
18-19 2.25
19-20 1.25

Leafs fan, but I think that there's no way Philly does this. DiPietro is an injury machine, they won't trade mediocre goaltending for a piece of crap.

DiPietro has played a total of 47 games in the last 4 yrs.

He came into this season, saying he felt great, better then he had in yrs.
He then went on to play 8 games.

At some point,he will have to face the truth:his body cannot stay healthy.
He will retire and insurance will pay most of his salary.

41.5 mil for DP left vs 41 mil for Bryz left. I'll do it simply because what's the worst that could happen? We're already paying DP and not seeing anything for it. At least roll the dice with Bryzgalov that he can somewhat play better. At that point you guys can do whatever you want with Dipietro.

Only thing that deters me from this is that we have Poulin who I am really high on and he'd have no shot on the Isles at that point.

EDIT: I see Crew99AW's point. Fair argument to just remove ourselves of DP without taking on salary

Unsure why Philly would do this?

The worst thing that could happen, is that the thinned skinned Bryz never lives up to his contract, but stays healthy. While DiPietro retires and frees the Flyers of his contract.

You'd be getting the better goalie by a mile...

I'd still take Bryzgalov over DiPietro.

Maybe to keep DiPietro on LTIR and find a new goalie with the saved cap sapce, at least that's what I think the OP wanted.

Bryz is actually not a bad goalie, when he's not injured

What the? As bad as Bryzgalov's contract is, it still ends before DiPietro's.

Dipietro is very good.friends with both Garth snow and the NYI management (including the owner) so they will never trade him.

Thay said, why would Philly do this? Lol

Bryz had a bad year. He'll rebound and become the elite goaltender the Flyers paid for.

l
Yashin was also good friends with Wang.At the end of the day,Wang bought him out.
He'll be paying Yashin $2.2m for another 3 seasons.

Being good friends with Wang, doesn't help DiPietro's health. His body either can withstand the wear and tear of playing or it can't.

And if it can't,then it's time for retirement/insurance payments.

This.

How does getting rid of their starting goalie for a goalie who isn't even playing at the level of a third string goalie a smart move for the Flyers?

no way.

and i'm one of the few dipietro fans left.

Bryz IS a great goalie. Show the guy some faith and make sure the D back him up. He worked wonders in Phoenix. He proved he's a great goalie. Thats the only reason Philly signed him.

Cause DP is always injured, so they'll have him on LTIR. A rich team like the Flyers can afford the cost to get rid of Bryz's contract. That being said, I don't think the Flyers give up on Bryz after a single year, expecially when there were times during that year when he looked like he was worth the money.

Thing is he's constantly coming back for a handful of games per year, so it's not like the Flyers can put him on LTIR and have him "retire" there, like they did with Mike Rathje. DP plays every single season -- he just only does so for about a 15 game stretch.

I'd rather have DP retire, even though that's probably not going to happen.

15 game stretches?

He played 8 games this season. He played 26 games last season

DiPietro divided his time between Bridgeport and LI in 2009-2010:8 games with the Isles,4 games with the Sound Tigers.

He played 5 games in 2008-2009.

All this while having multiple surgeries and rehab stints.

I have to disagree. It sounds like rehabbing after these surgeries was tough.
I think he will eventually face facts and retire. He'll still get his big payday and is young enough,to move on to another career.Maybe on tv,maybe on the radio.

Don't think either team does this. Philly might as well wait and see if Bryz rebounds, and the Islanders are banking on DiPietro finally retiring while Nabakov holds the fort down until Poulin and/or Nilsson are ready. Nabakov is a fine goalie anyways.

Bryzgalov is at least somewhat decent.
