McPhee said in the press conference that Evason and Johnson probably won't be back, but he's not sure. IMO that takes them both out of contention.

Very good, although I would have liked Johnson back as an assistant again.

Agreed. So GMGM doesn't expect to have a hire by the draft.........I sure as hell hope he has one named by July 1st or the Caps (as if they were going to land a big fish anyway) will be at a disadvantage for FA.

@wyshynski: McPhee: NHL experience (head coach/associate coach) not mandatory for #caps coach.

So Cooper isn't categorically ruled out.

He also said that making the Finals didn't necessarily give anyone a leg up (Oates, Stevens).

My guess is the only way either is back is if the incoming coach doesn't designate a replacement.

I suspect the same, and it's not really a surprise. Would rather have a good head coach who wants to name his own assistants than a mediocre head coach who doesn't.

Ditto that. Even worse if it's a guy who doesn't have the connections to bring in his own guys.

Was he ever in contention? I don't recall his name coming up in any of our discussions at least.

Everyone has their own guys. Rightfully they should be allowed to bring them in, though an inexperienced one could maybe use a veteran to compliment him.

He probably wasn't under serious consideration but some have discussed him. Too many weaknesses similar to Boudreau's.

McPhee mentioned having fun with the coaching process and that some veteran candidates have been terrific in addition to younger options so there are definitely others in the mix it would seem.

At least he is not twiddling his thumbs.

Some interesting McPhee quotes from Katie's twitter. It appears he's on board with the rest of us

He specifically mentioned wanting the same buy-in and compete level as under Hunter, but more uptempo. He also said it would be important to consider the coach's system style and the makeup of the roster.

Dare I to dream?

Sunshine Daydream!

Did he say "uptempo" really fast?

I want to assume Ted told him the on ice product was too boring for fans and to pick it up. Or maybe he figured it out himself. After seeing LA, it's proof positive that we don't need to be in a turtle shell to win a cup. Just like good ole Terry Murray did in LA, hopefully Gale did the same here. He taught them (ok Ovi) that you have to be defensively responsible.

And hopefully George also took note that they made a big roster trade, and bolstered their C depth.

GMGM answered a lot about nothing. He specifically answered no questions.
Draft picks - "we will keep unless something happen,"
NHL experience (head coach/associate coach) not mandatory for caps coach
Wideman and Semin - no decision has been made
Speculation and rumors continue.

I hate Johnson and hope hes gone.

He was not good. People forget they played like absolute **** all year long. There was no improvement in defense during the playoffs. They may have looked a lot better, but they sure as hell weren't.

They turned the puck over way too much.

They tried to chase people who were faster, this one is a easy fix, tell them to go back in a straight line, instead it happened all year never fixed.

They never seemed to work on being able to get the puck out of the zone without icing it, every other teams defense man seem to know how to flip the puck up and have it go past center ice or the blue line really slowly, the Devils did this a lot had the wingers really try and pressure the puck.

You're making quite a lot of essentially baseless assumptions in blaming Johnson for many of those things.

Hate heh.

Let's start with whose idea it was to go to man coverage, and if that helped or hindered our GA and overall success in the playoffs. Man seemed to make it harder to break out, not that we had a breakout before we went man. Talk about a tough job?

I think JJ was tasked of doing the unthinkable. Make Sarge play aggressively, move his skates, get after players. And Sarge did ok under his presumed tutelage but then regressed back into passive habits. I am not sure he even hit anyone in 10 playoff games. Maybe a few on accident to go with -10.

From what Alzner said, he implied all coaches had a say in all aspects of the game. Good luck finding out exactly what JJ could be graded on.

Hey brah, Jimmy J just didn't get the lax bro lifestyle. He wouldn't let the bros to be free to do whatever they wanted on d. Man to man is for poor people.

I hope next season they hire an "Laviolette" and atleast try to get our forwards confidence back.. Primarily Ovetshkins.. And if that doesnt work, then they really need to start thinking about different outlook completely..

The absolute key for Ted and George is that the new head coach has no Stanley Cup experience. We don't want anyone who has touched that filthy thing.
