The Rangers have been molding their team with North American players that hustle, willing to sacrifice their bodies to block pucks, check the body, and have a tremendous work ethic.
Gaborik has been a great player for us but I think Torts gets frustrated with him. If he's not scoring, Torts wants him to give an all out effort and block shots, check, etc.
Is this a fair trade?
Rangers trade:
Gaborik
Blues trade:
Backes
Why the Blues would do it?
They were the 9th worst team in the NHL in scoring goals. Adding a player that can potential put up 40+ goals should help a lot.
Why the Rangers do it?
1. Backes can be a 25-30 goal scorer
2. He finished 12th in the NHL for forwards in blocked shots
3. He finished 12th in the NHL for forwards in hits 4. His cap hit is 4.5M which the Rangers save 3M that can be used to help sign Parise in the offseason. Parise can offset the goals lost from Gaborik.
5. He's from North America
6. He is DEFINITELY the mold of what Torts looks for.
You want the team to trade away more goal scoring?
Do you know how to read?
Why don't you read the bold...
How are you losing more scoring if you can use the 3M saved to sign Parise too.
Last time I checked, you would have MORE scoring if you had Parise and Backes.
Also, don't tell me we can afford both Parise and Gaborik because we have a lot coming off the books this year. With fellow young players getting raises in the future, you'd be put in a bad situation.

There is certainly no guarantee that Parise is signing with the Rangers, in fact, I see him re-upping with the Devils as soon as the playoffs are over. You then bank on a top 6 filled with grinders and Brad Richards to score goals. I'm not even the biggest Gaborik fan, but I'd look for a legit goalscorer in return - someone like Bobby Ryan.
You can afford Gaborik and Parise for 2 years and when Gaborik is a UFA, he'll be unsigned most likely. I doubt McDonagh, Stepan or Del Zotto will be making a lot as they are RFAs and Sather is great with these contracts.

Well my thinking is IF we can get Parise. Perhaps sign Parise first and then try to swing the deal. Obviously if we don't sign Parise, that extra 3M means squat since there is no one else worth spending the money on. I definitely don't think Semin would be worth the contract.
David Backes is the Blues captain and is untouchable barring a ridiculous overpayment that would never happen. Besides, the Blues need centers and left defenseman, not more wingers. [/thread]
How far off is it? What else would NYR have to add?
It's off in the sense that you'd have to first make even a bare cursory review of Blues needs and organizational depth before proposing a trade you want Blues fans to accept.

What do you guys think?????
I remember the Blues going hard after Gaborik when he hit free-agency.
However, you are missing a HUGE part of your post. Why the Blue do it. They wouldn't.
1. The Blues are looking to add a center, not subtract one.
2. They are flush with talented wingers. Not Gaborik's level of talent, but the Blues wingers are far from scrubs.
3. The Blues want tough, two-way players under Armstrong, Gaborik doesn't fit the profile of an Armstrong/Hitchcock player.
4. Oshie, Perron, McDonald, Steen, D'Agostini, Stewart, Schwartz, and possibly Tarasenko are all top nine wingers, not a position of weakness for the Blues next season.
5. Blues don't have a playmaker of Richards level to maximize Gaborik's skills.
6. Backes is the face of the franchise in St. Louis, must be factored in to any deal with him going the other way. Only two ways Backes leaves St. Louis are UFA and trade for game-breaking center (Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos.)
Backes is one of two untouchables currently on the Blues roster. The other is Pietrangelo.

You do know Hitchcock and Torts coach a similar style and like players that play that style right. So if Gaborik is not fitting in with Torts he will not fit in with Hitchcock. The Blues are not trading their #1 center for a winger. I honestly don't see any trade working out where Backes goes to the Rangers. A team does not trade their best forward an captain for a player like Gaborik when they already have a surplus of wingers.
There's a bigger chance we can trade Gaborik for Dustin Brown (and that's unlikely since he's tearing it up in the Stanley Cup and he's their captain). If you wanted a hardworking forward in exchange for Gaborik, that is.
I'm more curious in what Maple Leafs would want for Kessel. Gaborik+ (++?)?
