What does this do for us though? I mean, both will play at least 1 more year in the chl, so they're not goi g to the A this season. Why not sign them next year, kinda like bennett (not the same i know)?

i read on TIOPS (yeah, i know...) that the ELCs don't kick in until the players go professional. so, they won't kick in this year, with or without the NHL season happening, since they plan on playing at least one more season of juniors.
even if they wanted to go pro this year, they'd only lose that year if there was actually an NHL season. so, if there's a lockout, they'd just play in juniors and not lose that year.

maybe the uncertainties of the CBA mean that Shero would rather get it done now and know what he's dealing with.

The new CBA could make entry deals longer so I'm sure they wanted to get the 3 year ELC.

No, There ELC will roll back a year because they'll still be in Major Junior for at least another year (probably 2 for Maatta because of his birthday). Does mean they'll probably have a little bit of money in their pocket though.

I'm curious about this as well. I was thinking even if they do extend the ELC past 3 years that they might grandfather in those prospects who were drafted before a new CBA was signed. Probably not though.

Wouldn't make sense to grandfather it by draft year, just by signing time.
I doubt these guys get signed without the CBA uncertainty...but then again Shero has been signing high draft picks in their draft year the past couple years so who knows...it's just weird with Maatta since there is a very real chance that he plays 2 more seasons in the OHL (I think he'll play in WBS in 2013-14, but it is feasible that he could play in the OHL).

I'm pretty sure that's the plan (at least from what I've heard). What ever new restrictions are put on entry level contracts won't be applicable to anyone who's already been drafted.
Do players need contracts to play in the Preseason? If, so then maybe Shero just wants to sign them now and let them play a couple games before being sent back down?

No need to consult TIOPS or other sites; it says right in the articles the contracts do not START until the players turn pro. So the CBA has no bearing here. Neither have a chance of cracking this roster until 2014 at least. That will be Year 1 for both of them, if they both make it at the same time.

Määttä can't play in the AHL for two more years, same as Pouliot. Both were drafted out of juniors so the "20 years old or 4 junior seasons played" rule applies. Their ELCs will slide until then, unless they make it full-time to the NHL before that.

No reason to wait, really. The CBA dictates what the contract will look like so there's no negotiating involved, it's just about retaining your prospects instead of risking losing them if they choose to re-enter the draft or something.
I think there's probably a hefty signing bonus involved.. so whether or not the players choose to spend that money on a nutritionist or just simply a nice car is up to them, but it doesn't hurt to give them that option.
