Somppi is attending the rookie tournament. The article states that all 24 players scheduled to be at the rookie tournament will also be present for training camp.

I really like the idea of bringing the ECHL guys ... that makes the Lightning an excellent partner for the Kalamazoo Wings.

But as the coaching staff held its first meeting Thursday with what was left of the team, it issued a challenge for others to take advantage of a rare opportunity.

"They're going to get looks that they normally wouldn't get," said associate coach Rick Bowness, who is running camp while coach Jon Cooper is at the World Cup as an assistant with Team North America. "Players make those decisions for you with their effort and their play on the ice."
Quote:
"We're always wrestling, (Cooper) and I," Yzerman said. "As management, we're wanting to see these players, we need to see these players. And coaches, as camp goes along, we want to get their returning players into the lineup as many games as we can. This gives … some young guys that have been up and down that are knocking on the door a chance to play as well."

The Lightning will start to get some players back from the World Cup soon. Bishop (United States), Ondrej Palat and Andrej Sustr (Czech Republic) and Valtteri Filppula (Finland) head back from Toronto today with group play over and their countries eliminated. So soon will Cooper and wing Jonathan Drouin (North America), whose team was eliminated with Russia's win over Finland on Thursday.
Quote:
Yzerman said Wisniewski, who fills a need as a right-handed shot on the power play, should get a lot of playing time in the preseason with four defensemen at the World Cup. Wisniewski said that factored into his decision to come to Tampa Bay.

"We're going to give him a very good chance to make this team," Yzerman said.

Johnson said he feels "100 percent" coming into camp this year, something he couldn't really say last season as he dealt with a lingering issue with his wrist. That issue carried over into and throughout last season, and Johnson said he never fully recovered until this July.

"I didn't have any strength in it until I started working out," he said. "You can't really do too much during the season. I was trying to just make it feel as best as possible, and it took me a while. Now, I feel good, and I don't even think about it anymore. It's not even an issue at all. I feel happy about it."
Quote:
Callahan said his rehab is on schedule, and he still figures to return to game action at some point in November.

"It's kind of far away, so you never know if things can speed up quicker than that," he said.
Quote:
"We've had a good team for two years, we've gone to the finals, we've gone to the conference finals, but the bottom line is, we weren't good enough," Bowness said. "We didn't win the Stanley Cup. So, we're not going to stop improving, we're not going to stop tinkering until we win the Stanley Cup. We're not here just to win. We want to win the Stanley Cup."

Looks like Imama gets a stop in Syracuse before the organziation makes a decision. Makes the home and home vs the Comets so much more interesting now in preseason.
