[CAR] Carolina Agrees to Extension With Jamie McBain [2yrs, $1.8M cap hit]

Quote:
RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Jamie McBain on a two-year contract. The deal will pay McBain $1.7 million in 2012-13, and $1.9 million in 2013-14.

I would say this would ease the speculation that he could be on the block.

might just make him a more attractive trade option.

was just going to say this.

Now he's a more valuable trade piece. Unless there is an immediate NTC, that is.

It might. But, it's not really often that teams re-sign a player just to trade him (I know SJ did this with Setoguchi last summer, and they took some mild flak in the press because of it).

So why do people think he might be traded?

Carolina's got a logjam at D and some of our more promising prospects should be NHL-ready soon. The only D in the current lineup that has any value (and wasn't just signed to a NTC) are Pitkanen and McBain

Nice deal for the Canes, I like McBains game, and think he'll be a solid Top 4 Dman in the future if he isnt already. Thats also a very nice cap hit.

Good deal -- guy does a lot well and that's a nicely priced contract.

I don't believe players can have a NTC/NMC during their RFA years (why on some of the long term contracts like Carter, Ovechkin, etc. the NTC didn't kick in until a few years after the deal started).

somehow, faulk surviving an up and down rookie year at 19 has made mcbain expendable. mcbain is the best homegrown d we've had in 15 years at least. he is an offensive guy with decent size, who is still learning how to be consistent in his own end. he has improved his "walking the line" in the offensive zone to the point of it being an asset. his one timer has become border line deadly, and his wrist shot has always been quickly released and accurate. he is a smart offensive player with good instincts. the defensive zone awareness is coming but like many young defenseman of this ilk its taking time. he has a quick stick, and while not particularly physical he is a capable defender. havent seen him beat one on one much at all really, his errors have been reads in front of the net and the occasional turnover with a risky pass.

canes fans think he is expendable because of faulk, and the potential of incoming dmen ryan murphy and brian dumoulin. even if these two made the team this year, we would have three very young and inexperienced dmen in the lineup even without mcbain. rutherford is unlikely to do this, and the two new guys will likely benefit from a year or two in the minors. canes fans have been told we are getting at least one higher end forward this off season, and unless its a ufa it will be a trade so canes fans are trying to find reasonable "expendables" we can give up in such a trade and mcbain has made most of their lists. i think its ludicrous to move him unless its for one of these types of players, where we give him up with other assets in a package. as is, there is no reason faulk and mcbain cant coexist in the same lineup. until these others take away actual spots from more veteran players, mcbain should not even be considered for a trade unless its for a b ryan/j staal "type" of player (i said type to not offend any pens fans who feel the need to insist they would never take mcbain in a trade for staal).

rutherford has said he considers mcbain a top 4 NOW, and considering this and what other young dmen get this is a very good contract.

Very good contract. I don't want JR to move McBain even though Faulk may be the better player going forward. McBain is solid and will only get better.

Very hard to disagree with this. Spot on with the scouting report. IMO, Pitkanen gets moved before McBain does. Also, I think it's quite possibly that both R.Murphy and Dumoulin make the team next year. With the likes of Faulk, McBain, Murphy and Dumoulin, CAR's blueline is going to be deadly in a couple of years.

OT but I'm excited to see more of Dumuolin, I actually went to school with him and he seems like a good prospect.

Good size, pretty mobile and can shoot.

Exactly. A player with a contract is more valuable then one without.

Carolina isn't exactly stacked on D, I'd be keeping a tight grip on McBain short of bringing in a shutdown guy +

Flyers could use a guy like McBain if the Canes are up for trading him.

Most likely a #2C, or a winger for Staal.

While He might be trade bait I'd be surprised to see him moved before the season starts.
