Anyone else excited for the Czech-Slovakia Semi?

Is this going to be as big an event in those two countries as I think it might be?

I am Slovak, my wife is Czech. And I know 4 another couples like that. Whoever wins, the world win not end at least for my family.. Also, it is better to meet in semis, than vying for the medal next day.

Just curious, do these countries have a heated rivalry? I assume they are rivals at some level, but would they consider each other bitter rivals? Each other's biggest rival outside hockey?

I am pumped for this game.

Czechs and Slovaks are like best friends so not really huge against each other except during the game but still great! Just my opinion, I'm Czech.

I'm excited for it. The Czechs and Slovaks seem like a great rivalry in the sense that they're two teams who have great respect each other, yet love nothing more than to beat each other. I also love international hockey even if the World Championships are supposedly not "best on best". I may live in North America but I'm not biased against it.

Of course, I'm from New Zealand and I grew up being taught that international play is the highest level in any sport.

My best friend is Czech and we've been sending each other some... ugly... messages ever since the matchup was finalized. Going to be war tomorrow. All in good fun. Mostly.

Hope it will be a good game. I know it's terrific for your 2 countries. It's even more than Swe-Fin (is it possible?). But i regret we cannot see CAN vs SWE.

As far as formerly joined nations go, the Czechs and the Slovaks have my complete respect.

They went each their own way in a civilized manner and are like brother-nations today, just independent.

Very unlike some other rivalries in sports or politics, I really don't see any hate between them.

We never warred against each other and mostly, we consider ourselves brothers, there is a certain percentage on both sides which doesn't like the other side very much, those are minorities though.
I always cheered for SVK in ice hockey, obviously unless they played us.

All that being said, you really don't want the other side to gain the bragging rights since we meet each-other a lot and you wouldn't hear the end of it till the next WHC, especially if it's slovaks winning since they don't get to beat us a lot, they would rub our noses in it all year long and we can't have that.

Oh yeaah. The rivalry is there. Maybe it is not such hot, as it was in 90-ees but we are still big rivals.

Its like big brother - little brother. Wenn big brother has a cake, the little one want it too. And if he doesnt take it, he is jealous, angry ...

Oh yes:-) I was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Dad Czech, mom Slovak. Love both countries...love the sport rivalries (both football and hockey, others donīt count;-).

Itīs gonna be huge tomorrow Iīll be rooting for the Czechs but wonīt feel too bad losing...because I know half of my family living in Slovakia will be one crazy-happy bunch

There is nothing to lose.
If Slovakia will be defeated, it was expected. If Slovakia win this one, it will be huge.

I believe. I like games against Czech, it's always a big game.

I'm quite sure Czech's are going to win this and probably it won't be even a close game (at least score wise). I'd like to see Slovaks take it but then again why did Czech's go through all that trouble beating Sweden so they could loose now.

How can you not be excited about a local derby?
Czech-Slovak, Sweden-Finland, Denmark-Norway all have their charms.....
At least you can be confident that one part of a once united country will reach the final, so in that way you can't loose! But off course everyone wants the teasing rights of winning and mentioning it's as often as possible until next time!

not vs Czechs. Whoever wins, owns the bragging rights for next summer, autumn, winter till next World Championships. I dont want to have my ears full of my Czech friends for that long.

I am. Games like this are a big reason why I enjoy the WC.

Quick question; do Slovaks understand Czech language and vice versa?
