Mark Messier Wanted to Give the Rangers a Pre-Game Pep Talk, but Torts Said No?

My dad said he heard on WCBS 880 AM that Messier wanted to give a pre-game pep talk to the Rangers before tonight's game, but Tortorella said no. I can't seem to find an article on this anywhere. Can this be verified by anyone here? If this really happened, I think this was a controversial decision by Torts.

I would have let Mess speak but this doesn't shock me at all.

The other day after practice a reporter asked Torts about '94 and Torts dismissed it and said something like that was then this is now, this group has nothing to do with that group.

Torts seems to want to create a NYR legacy and identity outside of 1994.

Glad Torts denied it.

This team is not about Messier. The Rangers win, it's the Rangers winning.

Messier comes in the room, blabbers on about some crap, the Rangers win, now it's all about Messier.

Can we cut ties with this dude already?

Geez

It's their room. Mess has been around, but this is Torts room. No need to bring in a distraction to the group. Mark did his job 18 years ago, let Cally, Richie and Co. do their job tonight.

Don't know if it's true or not but not surprising. That's not Tortorella's style...

I think if it was done privately that would have been the right move. Then again that may be hard to do with a lot of eyes on Messier at the moment.

To be honest it doesn't rub me as Torts' style to give a rah rah speech himself before a big game.

He speaks alot about how "it" has to come from within the group and the team, and he's said in more than on press conference how "this is the cup if your tired or not motivated at THIS stage in the season something is wrong"

Torts is trying to have this group step up and make its own way.

Agree with the decision if true. If any player wants guidance from Messier they know where to find him.

Torts said yesterday he has no plans for a guest speaker. I also love how he plays dumb when the media brought up 94 game 6. "Crap" Lov him!

I agree with decision.

Messier is a god in this town, but this is Cally and Torts' team.

I can't wait to raid the pebble tonight!!

Am I the only one tired of the constant 1994 chatter?

I highly doubt that a speech by a guy none of our current team ever played with would make any sort of difference. This team will live or die a Tortorella motivated unit.

This isn't Messier's team. He was a good leader but his time has passed.

If someone wants to make a speech, it should be Hank, Richards, Cally, etc. It will mean a lot more to the team if it's coming from a player that they have been battling with.

I'm not entirely surprised. Mess should've given Callahan some advice on a speech if anything, but it's right. This isn't Mess' team (well.. atm it will be in a few years when he totally takes over for Sather). Having some dude that half the team didn't even watch win the cup won't benefit anybody nearly as much as the guy leading them now could. Maybe some choice words for Cally to motivate him, but the team knows what they're doing. Mess is a great guy and lead every team he played, but Cally is the now.

And besides.. Lays aren't exactly a pre-game food.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for Ryan Callahan.

Not sure what you mean.

That is the ONLY captain that matters to me.

Messier tarnished his legacy in my eyes when he bolted for the almighty dollar when he ran off to Vancouver.

I would prefer that he (Messier) have NOTHING to do with this franchise on a going forward basis.

LOL yeah that makes sense, if only we could go back and time and never even get him on the team we would still be going 72+ years strong without a cup.

That's nice. Some fair weather fan you are. You have a short memory. There wouldn't have been a 94' if it wasn't for Messier & this fan base would be crying a river.

I have no issues with what he did up until 97.

It's how he treated the organization after the cup win and when that extension was completed how he ran off for more money.

He threatened to hold out and not show up for the Banner raising ceremony the following season.

Granted he had a clause that allowed him to re-negotiate his contract if he won a cup, but he could have played the early season games while that was being negotiated.

Nope. He was going to no-show the event with out a new deal.

He strong armed the Rangers and there was no call for it.

I have a slight issue with that, but I look the other way as he did help with the Cup.

What he did, on top of that, in 97 to me is unforgivable.

Let's see how much of the obvious I can put in one post:

Torts is the coach and whatever decision he makes is fine. Mess' words will not win or lose this game. They only mattered in '94 because he was backing them up on the ice. Time for the current Rangers to establish their own legacy.

Let's Go Rangers!
