Who would trade for him? Really, it has little to do with his play but more with the terms of his contract.

Bryzgalov is nowhere near one of the best in the league. Maybe the best at being the worst.

I think it might be Ward. Goalie that basically keeps his team out of the gutter and gives them a chance to make the playoffs. Why Carolina would want to trade him, I'm clueless, but that's my guess.

Oops I guess I missed that. Miller is awesome I just didn't think he was better than price. I would consider them pretty even as far as being game saving goalies. Price just needs a good team in front of him. Pretty good numbers for one of the worst teams in the NHL.

Obvious answer: Thomas
Conditional real possibility: Miller, if Chicago or somebody offers top dollar.

Sleeper: MAF Pens could live with him and his inconsistency but could do it for less with an eventual replacement; but who would pay for MAF + his salary?

Luongo: Yeah, but even more so, thus rationale is 'nucks would have to eat some salary coming back...

The Wild don't really have that big of a goalie issue (i.e. too many) at the moment.

Endras will not be retained.

Harding will test Free Agency.

That leaves us with Backstrom as our starter and Hackett/Keumper in Houston with the possibility of Keumper being assigned to Orlando so that he can face shots with regularity.

Our Swedish (Gustafsson) prospect will be over in Sweden next season.

If Backstrom would be traded, the first sign will be a re-signing of Harding. The package for Backstrom would need to include a goalie coming back to fill in as a back up or a tandem 1a/1b split with Harding.

Hackett, while promising, could do with another full year as the starter in Houston.

Also, before everyone goes down the Columbus path, Backstrom and Todd Richards didn't necessarily get along. Earlier this season, Backstrom made a few off handed comments about how it was (paraphrasing) nice to have a coach express confidence in his abilities.

I doubt Tampa is a good fit for Backstrom when they can sign Vokoun or Harding or go after Luongo.

Toronto could be a better fit as I could see a desire for a Connolly/Lombardi in the package. However, Backstrom likes a more toned down atmosphere around his games, so the media tornado that is Toronto would not be a good fit for him.

Chicago and Minnesota will never be trading partners again. That whole Barker for Leddy/Johnsson trade thing really made Fletcher look dumb.

Simply put; I seriously doubt it is Backstrom.

Edit; Although, I also remember Burke telling the Toronto media that the goalie he wanted wasn't available at the Trade Deadline, but would be available around the draft...

MAF makes five mill. Most of the time he's one of the best in the NHL. A lot of teams would love to have him. He played too many games this year because Johnson was terrble. It wasn't just him in the playoffs the dee fell apart. The Pens have no one behind him. I guess they could bring back Gilles Meloche.

And arguably is overpaid as he is inconsistent. The man has perhaps best reflexes in the game, but not the skill to control them all the time. When he does, he is as you describe. But it is also true he has been up and down. Maybe true he only needs a good backup.

J. Staal may want to come here next year, have top C billing + hang out w/Marc.
We'll give you Biron to accelerate the process.

That's pushing it.
When he's on he's top 10ish G and that's close enough.
But he is not always on.

They just prefer him for like 3, 3.5m max.

Remember Eklund regularly talks up Niemi, he really likes the guy (for some reason). In his magical world he could see Niemi as a 'top goalie'.

To Toronto: Carey Price
To Montreal: 1st overall and 3rd overall
To Edmonton: 5th overall and some other stuff

Edmonton drafts Murray, Montreal drafts Yakupov and Galchenyuk.

He sucks and he has an obscene contract. Yep, I'm sure GMs would be beating down Holmgren's door for a shot at that.

2 rather big problems IMO:

1. Murray likely not there at 5.
2. Oilers would need more than "some other stuff" to move down to 5.

I don't see any reason Edm does this.

Why not just cut them out of the deal?

Hey, if Edmonton isn't interested in acquiring "some other stuff" it's their loss. I guess.
