Best one on one deker to beat you while carrying the puck up the ice: Kovalev

Best one on one moves down low: Jagr (with Samsonav behind him)

Best one on one player based on strength and size with the puck: Thornton

Best one on one player based on strength and size without the puck: Chara

Kovalev. I've seen him kill off good portions of power plays just by holding the puck and deking around anyone who tried to get it.

If Kovalev is on the Ranger$, then Kovalchuk. If Kovalev is anywhere else, it's him.

Agreed. Kovalev has some of the sickest puck handling/skating abilities I've ever seen.

Datsyuk is one of the most spectacular in a one on one.

Can't believe Peter Forsberg hasn't been mentioned yet..

Mike Modano is a sick one on one player as well.

Chris Drury is pretty explosive one on one, although he goes to the well a bit too often.

Of those not mentioned, Marian Hossa and Patrik Elias also come to mind.

Why is everyone saying samsonov? He was pretty good till all those injuries hit him. Anyway the best 1-on-1 players in the game today are Datsyuk, Kovalev, and Forsberg.

I'd have to say Kovalchuk, but Patrik Elias is pretty darned good too. If only Gagne played in a system that would allow him to be an offensive player, he could do some good stuff too

Can we take into consideration whether or not they have any ability at defending on a 1-1?

I dunno, Forsberg is a guy with strength and a guy who can own you down low. But i consider him a playmaker before anything else.

pure stickhandling and 1 on 1, imo is kovalev...no doubt. im a huge kovulchuk fan but he is pure shooter with speed. he has great moves to go along with it, but not the best in the nhl dekes. kovalev can dance thru anything, looking good all the way. i dont think anyone is really close, 1 on 1 you cant take the puck away. if he would play smart, he could be amongst some of the greatest o players ever, but all he ever really does is 1 on 1 puck possesion. if your looking for the best "player" who also is amazing 1 on 1 ...then kovulchuk, federov, samsonov.

i think the key to being great 1 on1 is lateral skating plus the stickhandlin, and all of the above are exceptional in that capacity. ditto st louis.

Its definitly poetry in motion when kovalev decides to carry the puck up the ice starting from his own zone during a PP. 9/10 times, he crosses the opposing blueline without having to dump the puck in.
