Looking back at the Drake/Cheveldae - Essensa/Bautin trade...

This has to be one of the worst trades I can remember Detroit making, just slightly worse than the Leino for OKT and picks deal

For any one here that got to watch Cheveldae in Detroit regularly back then what are your thoughts?
Can't say I really ever got to see a lot of Essensa back then before Detroit got him, but what a shame we gave up Drake in that deal also.

he let mike foligno score and we had to watch him to do the foligno leap for days and weeks on end in 1993

Oh dear...

How about Vernon for Chiasson? That one worked out pretty well...

Tim Cheveldae? Didn't he try to kill himself by jumping in front of a bus and the bus went five hole? Essensa was decent until he came to Detroit. Problem was that this was the era prior to Detroit focussing on team defense. We made a lot of our own goalies look bad.

Not as bad as Oates and MacLean for Federko and McKegney. Ugh.

One of the worst trades of all time.

The Marcel Dionne trade is also worth mentioning whenever we talk worst Wings deals. Those two lead this thread by a country mile.

I thought Oates had some issues, much like Primeau had some issues in Detroit. Granted, it would have been nice to get more in return, but I keep thinking there was more to it.

He did, same too many center problems. Only Shero could have made it work. But in any event the return was embarrassing especially since by most accounts Oates was a well known commodity that should have got a better return.

We should have gotten a better return, but Oates should have sucked it up and made himself okay with being the "#2." Trading Oates reminds me of trading Ciccarelli and Bowman's later comments about how it's not a coincidence that no one ever won a cup with Dino.

There were rumors Ilitch demanded Devellano trade Oates due to an off-ice incident.

Bautin smoked two packs a day and couldn't complete basic wind sprints. Someone didn't do their homework.

I remember Tim getting viciously booed by the crowd which lead to that trade. It didn't work out any better for us.

The crowd however, wasn't wrong for booing an awful goalie. Murray was clearly in the wrong for not making a significant upgrade, which was obviously needed. Murray got what he deserved when they canned his ass.

I wasn't old enough to see the Dionne trade go down.

The Adam Oates trade was bad, but this in 89 kills me since we basically gave Edmonton the cup...

Detroit trades F Petr Klima, D Jeff Sharples, F Adam Graves and RW Joe Murphy to Edmonton for C Jimmy Carson, RW Kevin McClelland, and a 5th-round pick

I don't recall anything of note from Cheveldae in Winnepeg, so the only decent player of the lot was Drake. And, didn't Winnepeg sell us Draper for a dollar in that timeframe?

Or, before that, Unger for Berenson. I think there's a rule now that Detroit GM's can't ever trade with St Louis.
