The Master

First teaser is out... Looks amazing. Nice to see Joaquin Phoenix back and apparently at the top of his game.

Very excited about this. Everything about that teaser trailer was great in my opinion. Paul Thomas Anderson is known for editing his own teaser trailers. The man has an Edgar Allan Poe-like ability to create tension.

I've been a fan of Joaquin Phoenix since probably the late 90's (Inventing The Abbots). He was also tremendous in his last film Two Lovers. It can't be a coincidence that PTA has chosen him to play such an unbalanced character given Joaquin's recent strange behaviour. Almost looks like he's kind of channeling Jack Nicholson. Anyways, it's great to see him back in form.

Sounds like Johnny Greenwood's soundtrack should be interesting as well. Also can't wait to see Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Paul Thomas Anderson, you are a talented son of a gun.

Edit: Is it me or does Phoenix very much resemble author Jack Kerouac in this trailer?

Edit 2: Anderson shot this in 65mm, and it just looks superb.

Edit 3: They're drinking torpedo juice by the way, made from pineapple juice and the 180-proof grain alcohol fuel used in United States Navy torpedo motors. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torpedo_juice

Critics at Cannes had the the opportunity to view 4 min film footage and this is what they had to say:

“The Master” seems destined for controversy. Paul Thomas Anderson has written a tale that is loosely inspired on the life of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. The short piece shown was enough to suggest that Anderson (“Magnolia,” “There Will Be Blood”) has again taken on an epic subject and will face it down fearlessly."

Joaquin Phoenix is the center of the story as a postwar drifter, searching for a path and racked by anguish or mental illness or both.

"I like it that it flies in the face of recent Academy tradition of safe, sappy fare. It throws down gasoline and lights it on fire. There will be blood, sex, sweat and tears. Anderson is a ferocious, creative mind at work — this is a deepening for him, not a detour."

"Wearing a pencil moustache and carrying an air of ambition and importance, not only does Hoffman look like L. Ron Hubbard, in the reel we saw, he describes himself as (among many other things) a writer, doctor and theoretical physicist. Those are all terms that have been used to describe Hubbard over the years."

And there are more clues throughout, including some scenes from a very confident looking Amy Adams, who plays Hoffman's wife Mary-Sue, saying that the the "only way to defend ourselves, is to attack."

definitely excited for this

also, any trailer that doesn't have a loud booming noise every 2 seconds and overly dramatic music is great

Short clip but has me pumped. I'm a huge fan of Paul Thomas Anderson and most of those involved in the film. My expectations are through the roof.

"The Master," Paul Thomas Anderson's highly anticipated new film, which made a splash at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday, is at least partially inspired by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.

Now, in an effort to quell any further controversy, Anderson has reportedly screened a cut of "The Master" for one of Scientology's most high-profile members: Tom Cruise.

According to TheWrap, Anderson -- who guided Cruise to a Best Supporting Actor nomination for 1999's "Magnolia" and is friends with the star -- showed Cruise the film, and the actor “had issues" with some of what was presented. What those "issues" were are unclear.

Per the website, The Weinstein Company -- which will release "The Master" on Oct. 12 -- is also planning to screen the film for John Travolta, another high-profile Scientology member.
