Big no to Shane O'Brien from me. As someone who watches Colorado a lot, he's a guy who has the ability to be a solid bottom pairing stay-at-home defenseman, but he's convinced himself he has excellent puck-moving ability as well. I can't tell you how many times he tried to make a nice stretch pass or carry it up on a long rush only to lead to an awful turnover.

If we lose Allen, I think we should go out and sign a guy who brings *exactly* what Allen does, so we can have the same team as last year.

We need a physical bruiser for sure - but Allen was getting old, and probably wanted too much money for a guy who brings zero offense.

Anyone else feel like we could replace Allen with Shane O'Brien, at substantially less as well?

This is just a gut feeling, but I think DaveG, Vagrant and LadyCane would probably agree

thoughts?

This doesn't include McBain, but I assume he's heading to Pittsburgh in a Jordan Staal trade anyway so...

The playoffs he had is the very reason why we shouldn't sign him, as he's going to get massively overpaid. I'd rather not buy as high as possible on a 36-year old defenseman, or anyone for that matter.

"After a fantastic playoff series between the Devils and Kings, the Carolina Hurricanes are happy to announce that Bryce Salvador, Dustin Penner, and Jarret Stoll will once be reuniting on the ice again, on PNC Arena ice that is. Our organization had to spend to at least reach the cap floor, so bringing in physical players will not only provide that big-bodied 1-2-3 punch down the middle at the center position, but will further solidify our group to hopefully make the playoffs. We like our group". -Jim Rutherford

The offseason could go much, much worse so I wouldn't have a problem if this is how it played out.

Worse, as in a trade for either Staal or Nash?

Yeah, Salvador is going to be the next Joel Ward type deal. He's going to get paid because of his playoff performance, but his performance in the regular season wasn't nearly as impressive.

It would all depend on what Rutherford gives up. I fear he'll over-pay in any trade that he tries to complete, and over-pay any free agent he tries to sign. To be able to add Penner, Stoll and Salvador to the roster, without subtracting any significant contributors from last season, would make for a fairly successful offseason in my opinion.

I can only assume Salvador's name has been connected to the Hurricanes because of MacLean. He just doesn't make much sense as a free agent target otherwise.

TBH, his playoff performance wasn't even THAT good. He took dumb penalties, was up-and-down on defense, and benefitted from some puck luck. There were times I wondered what the hell Mike Milbury was looking at during the intermission segments.

I agree that any deal for a top end foward will be an overpayment, which will most likely include at least 8th+Sutter. Signing free agents is the way to go this offseason. But the money that would contribute to Penner, Stoll, Salvador would be spent more wisely on Parise/Suter (hopefully both!!)

Presumably we'd be subtracting Allen if we went after Salvador...

Personally, I wouldn't assume that Sutter+8th are "most likely" to be moved in a deal. The 8th pick? sure, I could see that but all the talk about Sutter is a just talk because of the Jordan Staal thread.

JR has indicated that Sutter is part of the core and I don't think he'll part with him that easily, regardless of what other fan bases say. I would never say never, but I personally don't think it's "likely".

I'm kind of with justjoe2k5 though. Adding guys like Penner and Stoll wouldn't be that bad as they'd help this team and not cause as much of an overpayment as some of the other names being thrown around.

The one guy I'd throw a ton of money at if I was JR would be Suter. He'd solve a LOT of problems IMO.

He gives a true #1 D that takes a lot of burden off of guys like Gleason, Pitkanen, Faulk and McBain. Je's young enough to still be in his prime when some of the guys like Dumoulin, Murphy, Faulk, McBain, Levi, Biega, Alt, Lowe come into their own (not all of them will, but odds are a few of them will). He provides a good role model/mentor for some of these young guys. I'm not sure Gleason and Pitkanen would are best suited for that (Allen probably is more suited).

He also provides some trade flexibility if/when some of these young guys do make it.

Unfortunately, I don't see him coming here at all. I bet it will be somewhere like Philly or Detroit.
