Saw the incident last night and immediately thought ankle as well. Broken heel bone means no weight on the foot for 3 months. Then he's probably going to have some sort of PT or conditioning to get back on his skates. I'd say he will be ready by October, but it may take some more time to find his stride again.
I'd be OK with that or automatic icing - it worked out fine in the ECHL and I honestly didn't miss the chase to the puck.
I only have slight issue with it in the playoffs because beating out an icing could be the difference between scoring that winning cup goal or not.. I'd like the hybrid rule where the defensive player has to beat the other player to a line or it's waived off.
Honestly, injuries like this don't happen that often to warrant more then a tweak..
would have changed a lot in that instance, instead of both plowing into the same area after the puck Joni or the Caps player easily could have cut another direction once it was blown dead preventing any kind of injury. IIRC the only time the hybrid icing isn't called is if the offensive player is clearly in the lead heading into the zone to get the puck.
