2014 Women's Tournament General Discussion

Finland announced their team yesterday:

Goalies
41 Noora Räty, Ilves
18 Räisänen Meeri, JYP
1 Suonpää Eveliina, Team Oriflame

Defense
6 Hiirikoski Jenni, JYP
7 Jalosuo Mira, SKIF
5 Kilponen Anna, Team Oriflame
4 Lindstedt Rosa, JYP
20 Tarkki Saija, Kärpät
3 Terho Emma, Blues
80 Villilä Tea, UMD

Forwards
9 Hovi Venla, KalPa
21 Karvinen Michelle, UND
96 Nuutinen Emma, Blues
11 Rajahuhta Annina, Blues
29 Rantamäki Karoliina, SKIF
16 Tanskanen Vilma, Team Oriflame
77 Tapani Susanna, UND
23 Tikkinen Nina, Kärpät
15 Tuominen Minnamari, Blues
13 Välilä Riikka, JYP
10 Välimäki Linda, Blues

I'll have to watch the games because my hometown girl Susanna Tapani is on the team. So glad she finally went to US university (UND). I was afraid she'd pick ringette as her main sport.

So who would fit to Team Canada or USA from Finnish team?

I guess it's only Räty, Hiirikoski and Karvinen.

Since they apparently have an "old guard" issue, Riikka Välilä probably.

Finland actually impressed me quite a bit at the Worlds here in Ottawa in April.

Karvinen stood out, and obviously Raty is one of the best goaltenders in the women's game.

I'd take Raty over Szabados in a heart beat.

Women hockey players actually get paid a lot more in Russia than in other European countries. It's why a few Finns have been there and one player still plays there (Karoliina Rantamäki at Nizhni Novgorod SKIF) because the pay is good enough that she doesn't have to work at a real job alongside.

Everything I know about women's hockey tells me this is still a 2 horse race. Although it's not a race I'm too comfortable with after the last few Canada vs US games, although we did look good in the final 30 minutes or so in that last game, maybe Kevin Dineen can make the improvement that gets them past the Americans

Interestingly Finland has three players who were already playing in Nagano 1998: Välilä, Terho and Rantamäki. The latter two will have their fifth OG in Sochi.

Canada has Hefford and Wickenheiser but are there any others?

I believe those are the only two, Botterill would've been in her fifth but she decided to retire a few years ago. She is only 34 right now so she would definitely be able to compete.

With the talent pool the way it is for Canada though it is quite hard to keep making it especially as it is not a particularly lucrative profession

God knows, I've been wondering this for years, most of the good women played checking hockey with boys when they were growing up

Even more unbelievable is the Olympics are being held in Russia, you'd think there would be a push to have a great Russian Women's Team!

It would be a far better game to be honest, one of the biggest problem with the women's game is the lack of flow that is created by trying to avoid hitting.

There has been. They brought Yashin on as the team's GM and they did win bronze at the worlds in Ottawa last year.
