Players you wish we had drafted.

I'm not talking about the whole Daigle-Pronger thing, because anybody who said we didn't want to draft Daigle would have been out of their mind. But players who, at the time of the draft, you were exceedingly pissed off we didn't take. It may or may not have turned out bad in the end.

Here are a few of mine:
2005: We picked Brian Lee at number 9 overall, when I was really hoping for Marc Staal. Got that one right.
2007: We picked Jim O'Brien at number 29, when I was hoping for one of two offensive powerhouses in...Simon Hjalmarsson or Aaron Palushaj. Woops.
2011: Wish we picked Couturier, like a lot of people did. Guess we'll have to wait and see on that one, I think Zibanejad will be very good still.
2012: Hoping for Teravainen. Still have to wait and see.

Couturier over Zib in 2011, and I wanted to draft Tarasenko instead of trading the pick in 2010. Didn't know much about prospects until a few years ago, so I didn't have an opinion on much.

I wasn't even following hockey at the time of the 2002 draft, but looking back, we took Jakub Klepis and we could have gotten Cam Ward or Duncan Keith. I'll just assume that at the time, Klepis looked like a better prospect.

And yeah, Lee over Kopi.

1993 - Pronger!
1998 - Regehr or Gagne
2005 - Kopitar or Staal
2011 - Possibly Couturier, but will reserve judgement until Zibby has shown what he can do.

Edit: I didn't read the OP before posting, but the only one that pissed me off was not taking Kopi in 05.

Trading our 16th pick for Rundblad in 2010 made me scream WTF, because I had no idea who Rundblad was. I was fine with it after reading the scouting report. I wanted Tarasenko.

The rest is just based on hindsight.

Keeping one of those 2nds in 2010 and getting Jarnkrok.

Also if we had just not made those deals for Cullen and Sutton and had both 2nds and somehow managed both he and Faulk. That would be dirty.

2008- I didn't know much about prospects at the time but I was really hoping for Tyler Cuma... cause he was on the 67s... we ended up with a certain Swede
2009- I really wanted Paajarvi-Svensson over Cowen. Glad I was wrong on that one!
2011- Couturier over Zbad, we'll see how this turns out.

2008 was the first draft that I watched, so I'll start from there

2008- I was actually hoping for us to pick a goalie in Chet Pickard, but we drafted Erik Karlsson. At the time I was upset because I had no clue who in the world Erik Karlsson was. My bad.

2009- I was hoping for us to pick MPS. I did like Cowen, but I was a bit unsure how he would develop after his knee injury made him drop down a few spots. Again, my bad.

2010- I was actually hoping that we went with a local boy in Tyler Toffoli. We ended up trading the pick for David Rundblad, who was then traded for Kyle Turris. Well, Toffoli is looking like a decent prospect, and we didn't really pick anyone so I can't say much about this.

2011- I was screaming in joy when the Isles picked Ryan Strome in front of us. I was certain that we'd take Couterier, but Tim Murray goes up the podium and says Mike Zibanejad. Zibby is a great prospect, but I'm not quite sure how he'll pan out. Couterier wouldn't have been bad I guess.

2012- Wanted Cody Ceci, and got Cody Ceci. First time the Sens management and I wanted the same player

Like many other posters, I was caught up in MPS hype in 2009 and was absolutely thrilled when he was on the board. Then we picked Cowen.
Oh well, MPS went to my second favourite team and we got the better player in the long run.

2010 I wasn't too invested in any prospects.

2011, I wasn't really hyped on anybody. I wanted Couturier, but wasn't necessarily upset with Zibanejad.

For the 2012 draft:
Would've been happy with Ceci, Maatta, or Lindholm. We walked away with Ceci.
Would've wanted to take Calle Andersson in the third, we took Driedger instead.
Wanted to nab LaLeggia with a late round pick, ended up going to the Oilers.

Keeping Silf and Calle together would be sweet.

Also if we draft Couturier we probably never trade for Turris who very possibly could be the better player (but we keep Rundblad), and Zibanejad could fit better into our team as a Mike Fisher type player with higher offensive upside, IMO.

I really wanted us to draft Marcus Foligno. Would have loved those 2 brothers on the team ling term.

We now have neither...

I remember being at Local Heroes during the Cowen draft. When MPS slid everyone thought we were getting him.

Go to my post history to find all my "mark my words".

Mark my words: Zibanejad will have a better career than Couturier, and he will pay dividends within the next 3-5 years.

Yup wanted him too. Was bummed we had dealt away all those 2nd rounders.

The only one I have been upset about was the 05 draft. Wanted Staal over Lee. Didn't have much info on Kopitar as I had never seen him play.

We would have had to move a pick to get him given where he was taken, but I wanted us to get Pontus Aberg this year.

I also wanted MPS more than Cowen, and it wasn't even close.

In 2005, I really wanted Jack Skille, and was really mad when the Hawks drafted him the one pick right before our pick. I thought he would be the next great power-forward in the NHL.

I sure was wrong about that.

Based on who was available when Ottawa picked:

2005 - Kopitar
2009 - MSP
2010 - Tarasenko
2011 - Zibanejad, Matt Puempel (where Noesen was picked), Ty Rattie (where Puempel was picked)
2012 - Ceci

At the time rather than hindsight:

- Staal over Lee
- Rattie over Puempel
- Couturier over Zibby

Off the top of my head the only times I can recall thinking we were taking someone else and was kinda surprised. Obviously, my memory is terrible.

I was mad we didn't take Del Zotto in 2008 but obviously now the Karlsson pick was a steal!
