Georges Laraque wants to make an NHL come back

I saw this on the Habs board.

http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sport...723/story.html

Says he wants to return to the Oilers to finish his NHL career. Makes sense, he has a house there, his kids are there, he called it his home away from home.

He could go back to Montreal, he played for Therrien in Juniors and in Pittsburgh so he might go back to play in Montreal. Plus it's where his mother lives.

In the article he told his agent he would sign anywhere. I can't see Pittsburgh being interested unless Shero wants a familiar team enforcer as an extra forward.

Just thought I'd post this here because he's a former Penguin trying to come back to the NHL.

I'd offer him a camp tryout.

League minimum, sure why not? Agree on camp tryout...not expecting greatness but you never know.

Waste of a camp spot. Laraque is 35, hasn't played for two seasons and had already severe weight and back problems in his late career. Nice guy but no thanks.

Well in all fairness to Laraque, the articles said he had back problems, I assume that they are gone since he wants to return. And he used to be 290 lbs. He said in that article that he's 255 lbs. and will probably drop to 245 lbs.

C'mon guys. This guy could barely skate years ago, he's done.

Great human, but his hockey days are over....

He wasn't even that good at throwing down towards the end of his time in the league.

I'd love to see him back in the Penguins organization. Maybe not as a player, but definitely in an advisory/coach/front office/whatever role. He's an intelligent guy and an excellent ambassador for the game.

Still would be the toughest guy in the league, right now

Big F No on this one.

Look at when we had Big Mac this past season. He played only 12 games, recorded no points and only took 6 penalty minutes. That's about one fighting major and a randomly extra minute. In fact I seem to recall quite a few threads pertaining to his uselessness being made here this past season.

So if Big Mac was that much of a waste for us then taking BGL back again would be an even bigger and beyond utterly moronic mistake. At least Macintyre is a tough (although ultimately useless in our case) cookie. When he was a Pen a few years ago, Laraque was pretty "selective" in who he wanted to fight and when IIRC and even when he did fight, from what I remember his best days were far behind him.

It ain't worth it. Christ I'd bring Godard back first. At least Godard was tough as nails and a hell of a great enforcer who protected our guys.

Only if it's to replace Asham.

The last year he was in the league would say otherwise.

He will probably go to Philadelphia to replace Shelley.

Carle will leave and Talbot will take #25, Laraque will take #27.

Can't play, can't skate, won't fight unless it's a scripted goon-on-goon fight.

No. Absolutely not.

He might show a bit of promise in the early days of training camp, but he'd wear out by November (read: he'd be skating like a sedated rhinocerous).

Not even close. Asham can at least make a few good plays put the puck in deep and chase it with some speed. Laraque is simply useless. He doesn't fight and no one wants to fight him anyways so he would be a waste of a roster spot

Back problems don't usually just go away, you have to learn how to deal with them. Like he mentions he has to do yoga & acupuncture (Belfour did that too but also had to stretch his back before and after games for a few hours). That's all well and good for what he's doing, but adding in an NHL season, how long does that last?

If it was possible to sign GL for 50,000, i wouldnt do it. An enforcer who won't enforce is useless.

4th liner - check
Enforcer - check
35 or older - check

Yup, I could see him being signed and getting 10 minutes a game.

He said I'd RATHER have Asham. Think you misread that.

No thanks. All offseason long you see stuff like this with people replying "sign him for league minimum". Its like we want as many veterans as possible so everyone can ***** about Tangradi not playing in the regular season.

I'd rather have Asham as well but if he left and Laraque was available on the league min then It'd be worth at least giving him a try-out.
