goes to the theory of "buying" the UFA years (or in this case 1 year). They are essentially keeping him from the open market which inevitably costs more. Why the second year drop? Not sure but maybe it has to do with internal budget and how other contracts fit in.

Seriously, we're talking about the guy with the highest faceoff percentage on the team and was a +4 playing in a checking role on a team where you can count the players with positive plus minus on one hand (and none of the other guys making the list played regularly throughout the year).

Mackenzie had 6 fewer points than Dorsett...with 30% less TOI/G. So, I'm not sure I'd even sure Dorsett is any more gifted offensively than Mackenzie, just that Mackenzie got less opportunity.

And then there is the stupid penalty factor, which makes Dorsett less valuable than he might be otherwise.

We spent a ton of money to bring in a guy like Pahlsson. Mackenzie has become exactly that sort of guy. Should he get Pahlsson money? No. But he shouldn't get "maybe slightly more than half" of what Dorsett is making either.

We'll take it!

Now do Nikitin next, GMSH.

Solid signing. Dorse is only 25 years old, so hopefully he just continues to get better and in three years this looks like a steal. Of course, he could pull an Umberger and get a nice new contract and only decide to show up the last month of the season next year. Not sure this necessarily makes Boll expendable as Dorse cannot handle the fighting role alone - he's much better as an agitator with the occasional fight.

Congrats. He gets big money cause he plays with heart, something that has been sorely lacking on this club for a long time

I was kidding, but not sure about macs position with the team going forward will be. Boom Jenner will be coming up soon, letestu ideally is probably 3rd line center , and would have to think nikitin will be next priority . Just my opinion, I may be wrong . I would have to think it would be less than dorsett money, maybe 1.1 per year, a trade able contract is a must

Over the years I have wavered on Dorse, but he's really come into his own the past couple years. I'd like to think he has one more "step" to his game. A sandpapery bottom-sixer who can score a little is like, whoa.

Dorse is one of the best third liners in the league, he will never be a top six....

That said, ask King on the Kings what it means to be a third liner!

Good signing, for the fans and organization.

Outstanding description

$1.6m/season is a steal for this guy. He brings it every way he can every night.

If and when(so next year) we make the playoffs, Dorsett is the type of guy I want out there. I think he'll be like King,Boyle,Prust, etc. Add the odd goal from the 3rd/4th line. Throw his body around and hopefully wear down the other players body, and hopefully annoy people and draw a penalty.

I just remember that in our brief playoff run, Dorsett was about our top scorer. Heart, he showed a bit of ability to finish and not so many stupid penalites. He deserves this and I'm glad to see him back.

Actually, the main boards thread on this signing has almost exclusively complimentary posts.

I think that it's good he was re-signed, but at three times his salary? Not crazy about the money, but we do need players like him. Just think this deal could have been for a cap hit of about 500K less (he made 575K last season). Not going to complain too much about the deal overall. Good for Dorse and good for the locker room.

The argument can be made his has improved steadily. I see no issue with his contract. Not really going to get worked up over 2 or 300k for the first couple of seasons. That last season looks daunting at 2 million, but it won't hurt the team.

At least he earned this contract. The key is that he'll have to continue to improve during the duration of this contract.

Dorse earned this contract March 31 in the game against the Blues. I am beyond thrilled to have him in the fold for a while!

That's about $100k less than what I'd expected. Cute.

I figure MacKenzie would get similar; hope we keep him too.

Glad to see DD will be sticking around.

From DBJ Plus on the FoxOhio site:

These are Dorsett's numbers from the past season:

Games Played Goals. Assists Points PIMs +/-

77 12 8 20 235 -11

2011-12 comparable forwards with a similar salary cap hit of $1.6 million:

Name Team Games Played Goals Assists Points PIMs +/-

James Van Riemsdyk PHI 43 11 13 24 24 -1

Cody Hodgson VAN/BUF 83 19 22 41 10 +1

Max Pacioretty MTL 79 33 32 65 56 2

Brett Connolly TBL 68 4 11 15 30 -9

Matt D’Agostini STL 55 9 9 18 27 +12

I found those to be pretty interesting and thank DBJ for digging them out. As he notes, in comparison, DD's money doesn't seem completely out of order.

(Sorry about the difficulty in reading the charts, I've never figured out how to get them to work correctly!)
