Do you guys think we should give Matt Irwin, Nick Petrecki, or others a shot on the 3rd pairing instead of signing a Kent Huskins or a Colin White for the 3rd pairing?

Im in favor of making Petrecki the #7. He has to work to earn ice time, and practicing against JT and co will help him improve more then the AHL would.

Demers and Braun earned their spots in the NHL with their excellent play in the AHL. Irwin played excellent and it resulted in a call-up to SJ (he didn't play, though).

It's not time to "give" the Worcester Dmen anything. If they earn it, then good. If Petrecki comes in with a really nice camp and pre-season, then give him the #7. But he has to earn it.

I prefer none of the above.

I do think that Irwin makes it so we could trade Braun or Demers and not be screwed. I'd like to keep both, but if we get offered a forward with some speed comparable in age and talent I wouldn't cry about going into the season with Irwin as a #6 to begin with, assuming he had a good camp.

It's time to give the goalie prospects a shot, but I think the D needs more time.

Basically, I am wondering if DW should leave one spot open on the blue line and let the Wooster kids fight for it. So essentially, they will earn there spot. Should we give them that chance or sign the usual veteran dman for the 3rd pair?

I'm on board with this. I want the young goalies to have a chance.

Teams that leave one spot open and hope the best kid wins it get screwed if it doesn't work out. See: New York Rangers. They assumed that Tim Erixon would be a solid bottom pairing defenseman (some were even pencilling him into the top-4), but he wasn't and he need to go bad to the AHL, and then the Rangers were stuck with Stu Bickel as a regular defenseman, when he's not even a replacement level #7.

Irwin and maybe Pelich. Not sure the rest of them are even close to NHL ready, i'm stretching it for these two.

When I went to the Woo for a game (hardcore fan ) Pelech was the most impressive Dman on the ice. He is big, mean, physical, and is sort of best built for the prototypical 5/6/7 Dman.

... and I never thought I'd say that before this year.

Pelech can play in the NHL as a 5/6/7. He was pretty good when he played for Calgary but he was kind of caught up in a numbers game with Pardy. He couldn't be any worse than what the Sharks rolled out.

It's nice to see his game develop to that level. I'm penciling him in as the #7 next year.

I know Pelech achieved meme-status at the beginning of the season for his piercing, psychopathic eyes, but is he actually good enough to play in the NHL?

He has NHL experience so its not like he's green. I think he would fit in very well in SJ. He seems to be a solid character guy and does heavy lifting in the physicality department.

They can give Matt Irwin a shot. He's probably the guy that has earned it. The question is where you'd slot him. If he's on the third pairing next year, he's playing with either Braun or Demers and I don't know how well that would work.

Its never a good idea to go into the season with your AHL players as plan A...but maybe they can get calls during the season and see who sticks.

You can go in with them if they're in protected situations. That's how most of the role player level guys make the jump.

I'd love this as the sharks D

Vlasic - Burns

Stuart - Demers/Braun

Braun/Demers - Irwin/Petrecki

Requires one free agent signing (stuart), and convincing Boyle to leave...plus a step up by one of the young guys...definitely a lot faster though
