2012 NHL Draft: a look at the Calgary Flames (THW)

by Ryan Pike of THW and FlamesNation.ca:

Excerpt:

Quote:
One year ago, newly-promoted Calgary Flames general manager Jay Feaster went to the podium at the Xcel Energy Center and pulled a rabbit out of his hat. Drafting 13th overall in the first round, Feaster chose Swiss winger Sven Baertschi. Within the year, Baertschi had dominated the WHL and spent two weeks in the NHL with the Flames during an injury recall stint.

The rookie didnít look a bit out of place.

Now firmly entrenched in his general managerís office, the pressure is on for Feaster to once again have a strong draft after selecting Baertschi, NCAA standout John Gaudreau, WHL playoff MVP Laurent Brossoit and others at the 2011 draft.

Good points mostly though a lot of us are more high on Irving. At our position we may not have the chance to draft high end talent but may end up with safer top6/top4 players.

I believe drafting a defenceman possibly that's falls would be the best choice.

The article covers some pretty decent points. We made out like bandits on paper in the last draft, and arguably the potential is there for the 2010 draft as well, considering our highest pick was in the third round.

They even failed to mention that Markus Granlund had a potential rookie of the year campaign.

Regardless, Feaster has my trust in the draft so far, I hope he keeps it. If we can't get Faksa or unless some other forward falls, I want a defense man. I doubt Murray, Trouba, Dumba falls, but that doesn't mean that one of Reilly, Maatta, Reinhart, Ceci, etc. won't be available.

Maatta & Ceci both have very good chances of being available at 14; actually in my opinion, more than likely we'll be getting one of these two (Which if anyone has been watching London's play... This Maatta kid might be another sleeper like Sven drafted in the middle of the first round). I can't see Reinhart dropping below 10. Reilly I can see maybe slip to 11-12... but not any further (he'll more than likely go 9-10).

Trouba, Dumba & Murray will most likely be gone within the first 7 picks. Unless somehow Craig Button has magically discovered he is the greatest scout of all time.

Whoever we get, I'll be more than happy with. Feaster hasn't disappointed me yet.

I think the Flames filled some holes last draft, but we won't see the fruits of it until next and the following season. I do agree with the article (with the exception of goaltending) that we have holes across the board. So I agree that we need to take the best player available with every pick, however I am hoping they grab another forward with their 1st pick, someone that has top line potential in the NHL.

Any chance anyone seeing Ferland making the leap granted a good training camp? Or would he need a solid stint in the AHL?

I doubt it. You can expect to see three of Tanguay, Glencross, Cammalleri, and Bartschi to take up space on the LW next year.

Ferland plays a power game and it's best to have that develop in the AHL instead of on the 4th line. It wouldn't have to be just a good camp, it would have to be an unbelievable camp and even then management might send him down with the intent to bring him back up when injuries hit.

I agree, draft a defenseman if one falls. Particularly Dumba or Reilly. Very doubtful that Trouba, Reinhart or Maatta falls. If not, I like Faska or Galy if he falls.

Maatta has done nothing but make his stock rise in the playoffs and mem cup. He won't be available. We'd have a better shot a Dumba. Same deal with Reinhart, he looked too good in the playoffs to fall.

Agreed. I think Ferland is going to be a good one though. I have tickets for the Tigers and Broncos since I live right in the middle. I've seen a lot of Ferland and like him more than Reinhart. Ferland gets better with every game. He's had a great development curve so far. But he needs some time in the AHL, doesn't have a great hockey IQ yet which makes sense as he started playing so late. He has all the physical and effort tools though.

I wonder if CGY plans to do some shuffling on the left side. I hope they don't plan to bury Sven on the 4th line.

Cammalleri can play all 3 forward positions and Glencross can play RW. Its almost assured one of them will move from LW to another forward position, and possible both move.

That makes sense. I forgot Glenny did some RW during last season.

Irving needs to outplay kipper then we can trade kipper for a huge prospect

Other that I think a pp specialist dman is something we need.

Dumba is gone within the first six picks more than likely. I know maatta really did well in the playoffs and men cup... However, in most rankings he is still up there in the mid teens or early teens.

He might be the guy no one grabs and ends up being the baertchi like steal.

Unless we grab a guy like Morgan Reilly who slips due to injury we will not be getting a "Baertschi like steal". We should just be looking to pick a successful NHLer who can contribute to the team long term which is what I think Maatta is.

(also Baertschi wasnt a steal, he was a highly touted prospect who has somewhat exceeded expectations)

I know alot of people aren't as high on this guy as I am, but I would be quite happy with Zemgus Girgensons. The knock on him is he hasn't progressed this season as much as others would of hoped, but he doesn't play on a great team and have much of a supporting cast.

Every scouting report I've heard on this guy has been great, everyone speaks extremely highly of him. He is a great leader, extremely hard worker, and has lots of really good physical tools. To me, these are type of guys that become winners and they type you build franchises around. His style of game has been compared to a Brind'Amour or even Kesler. He may not be super flashy, but I think if he is available at 14 he would be a great pick.

While the jump has been more than projected, I really was expecting a highly talented guy on a great offensive team to have a great offensive year. He definitely exceeded expectations but i find it hard to believe a guy with his draft slot and pedigree can be considered a huge steal.

I haven't seen him play at all really. I'm leery of picking players ranked in the 20-25 slot on most draft boards that high. Have you seen him play a decent selection of games?
