Cubs making a strong play for the #1 pick in 2013. Hope there is a Bryce Harper/Steven Strasberg type at the top of that draft. This years draft is really weak, probably not going to get much at #6.

Cubs and Twins neck and neck so far. Could turn out to be 2001 all over again. (Mauer/Prior and I still remember how much **** Twins FO took when they drafted the local boy Mauer instead of the USC stud Prior)

In his first mock of the upcoming MLB Draft, ESPN's Keith Law projects the Chicago Cubs to select high school outfielder Albert Almora with the sixth overall pick. Almorra has been rising up draft boards lately as one of the most explosive athletes in the entire draft.
The Cubs also have their eyes California prep lefty [Max] Fried and Puerto Rico's [Carlos] Correa. Almora, who has an advanced feel for hitting and good range in center, is the likely favorite here.
Almora currently plays center field for Mater Academy Charter in Hialeh Gardens, Fla. Coming in at 6-foot-2, 170 pounds, scouts have been increasingly impressed by the prep outfielder's polish despite being so young. He's not exceptionally fast, but uses strong instincts to run quality routes in center field, yielding plus results.
New Baseball America's Jim Callis updated his first round mock draft on Friday, and he projects that the Chicago Cubs will select shortstop Carlos Correa with the sixth overall pick.
Here's one evaluation of Correa from back in January by Baseball America:
Correa has a pro body at 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds with a high waist and room to fill out. Despite his large frame, he's light on his feet and shows fluid actions at shortstop with soft hands and above-average arm strength. Correa is a little raw at the plate and is currently a free swinger, but has some strength and hits the ball hard when he makes contact. He's an above-average runner now but may slow down as he fills out
New All eyes are on the new brain trust of the Chicago Cubs, Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer, as the duo prepares for their first draft with the North Siders. The Cubs hold the No. 6 overall selection in the draft, and a new mock at Minor League Ball has the Cubs taking San Francisco right-handed pitcher Kyle Zimmer in the first round.
Zimmer is 6-foot-4, 220 lbs and a native of La Jolla, California. The junior is a classic late bloomer who, unlike most ace pitchers in college, hasn't piled up a ton of innings on his arm. This is just one reason why scouts are projecting Zimmer as a consensus top ten draft pick.
Zimmer is 5-3 this season with a 2.59 ERA to go along with 96 strikeouts and 15 walks in 83 1/3 innings. His fastball is set to sit between 93-97 MPH.
I really hope they don't take an 18 year old hitter, I've already stated how much I hate projects like that. I'll be pretty pissed if they take that Correa kid, I hate free swingers at such a young age who have played against such poor quality of opponents.
Karsten Whitson is going to be better than Strasburg, in my opinion. He's got similar stuff, though he doesn't throw as hard, and doesn't have awful mechanics.

I've seen some video of him, and he can hit the cover off the ball. Normally, I'd agree, but if he's developed right, he'll be an All-Star easily.
Just to further expand on my dislike for HS aged prospects... I just looked at Tim Beckham's numbers, former #1 overall pick by the great drafting Rays. Last year in his 4th MiLB season he hit .271 with 120 Ks to 41 BBs over 524 ABs. His OBP was .328 with 12 bombs and and 17 SBs. This year he is off to a pretty terrible start with a .204 average and .290 OBP, with 0 HRs and 1 SB. That is over 54 ABs, which I'm not sure why is so low.
I know this obviously this isn't the case for all, but just thought I'd throw him out there for an example. Hell, look at the 2004 draft... Matt Bush (the SS), Chris Nelson, Trevor Plouffe, Greg Golson, and Blake DeWitt were the hitters drafted out of HS in the first round. They all suck. The 2003 draft was just as bad for HS hitters in the first round.
