I only saw Sawchuk when I was very young and he was finishing his career, so I can't rank him. (However, friends a little older than myself say he was the best.)

Here's my choices for top 10 goalies that I saw and remember:

1. Plante

2. Worsely

3. Hall

4. Roy

5. Hasek

6. Brodeur

7. Esposito

8. Parent

9. Vachon

10. Don Edwards

They're all sitting together on the "top shelf".

No goalie has separated themselves from the pack like gretz, mario and orr.

Can't wait to see the beast that does...

Just put Roy in the 80's and Belfour in the 90's. dilemma solved.

When I saw Plante play he was already an old man but dominated his time on the ice. Not just dominating the crease, but his end of the ice. People do not realize how much impact he had on a game because it couldn't be described statistically.

The opposing team could not dump the puck into Plante's zone and go for a change. Plante would go pick up the puck and rifle it down to a team mate waiting at center.

The opposing team could not ring the puck around the boards from the point. Plante would stop the puck and clear the zone, often carrying the puck out to the hash marks himself as he waited for an opening.

Opposing forwards could not approach the net without being charged, checked and embarrassed by Plante. He would take the puck away, skate around the forward and pass out of the zone. This happened every period, not once or twice a year.

Watch Sawchuk and others of the era and you'll notice they are often hopelessly out of position following the puck carrier. Second shots were blocked by defencemen that knew thier tender would be flopping around away from the net. Then, watch Parent. He was never out of position and quite literally wrote the book on positional goaltending.

Plante was the greatest of his era, not because he wore a mask, not because he won games, but because he studied the game and reinvented it. Orr and Gretzky can be mentioned as innovators but each had antecedents. Plante followed no examples, he was the pioneer who brought never before seen techniques to his play. He was the example.

Belfour won the Calder in 1991.

Of course thats just ranking the 5 goalies asked by the OP. Not sure why ppull would be putting guys like Hasek in there when he wasn't part of the question. Shows how biased some ppull are though. lol

I'm wouldn't be surprised if the people who included Hasek think that your comment shows how biased you are.

I'd really be curious to see a top-30 goalies list from you.

Please explain yourself. I have zero bias towards Hasek, or anyone for that matter. Frankly your post makes absolutely no sense.

When five (5) players are listed and the thread is about ranking those five players, then bringing in a sixth player is ASININE!!!!!!!

For example : rank the following A, B, C, D, E

Reply. Duh, well what about T? I think T is better than either A,B,C,D, or E.

Response. Who the frick cares what you think about T? The thread is about ranking A, B, C, D, E. T does not enter the equation.

Please explain yourself.

Well thank you for asking so nicely!

I wasn't suggesting that you have a bias against Hasek, I was pointing out that it is a suggestion as valid as the one you made.

And, considering how personally you appeared to take it...

you have two different eras of goal-tending there.

I would take Brodeur over Roy in the Modern era--roy falling out with the habs was just silly and both sides over reacted

Hall, then Plante and then Sawchuck

1. Your welcome.

2. How is pointing out that bringing up a 6th or 7th or 8th player, who was not mentioned in the original thread request to rank 5 players, anywhere even close to being the same/as valid as your insult that I had a bias against Hasek despite the clear cut obvious black and whiteness that my point had nothing to do with Hasek per say, but rather the principal involved in bringing up a player not listed in the original post?

3. Never took anything personally though you clearly did.

It's on the public record; let the people reading make of it what they will.

lol - hilarious - so when I create a thread asking posters to rank Forsberg, Sundin, H Sedin, Loob and Naslund I can probably expect a bunch of ppull to list Howie Morenz too. R sum!!!!!
