Round 1 Pick: Do We Need It?

Obviously, with the pick we have, we can draft ourselves a pretty damn good prospect or even use it to move up in the draft. However, I feel as though there are some pretty damn solid players in our system already. Do we need that first-round pick? We could almost use the pick in a trade to acquire ourselves a solid top-six center or defenseman. Thoughts?

If we can use it to improve our team, we should trade it.

If we are trading it to get another pick, or for a player that is redundant on the team, then you keep it.

No we don't "need" it.

Obviously, it depends on what the return is. But, I don't think we need it - it seems like there players that will be available from about 12 (or maybe even earlier) to 50 are kind of similar. I'm sure some are better than others...but it doesn't seem like a deep draft.

If we were to trade it for another pick, i'd rather get the first round of a team anticipated to suck next year ... b/c that's supposed to be a good draft.

If you're picking outside the top 10, you never really "need" your pick.

Tell that to Calgary and San Jose.

I don't like trading top picks ever, I actually hate trading top 60-90 picks tbh. Keep the prospect pipeline flowing.

on that note, we don't have a second or third for next years draft.

Totally agree. You need to have a constant supply of talented cheap young players in the system.

I'm as big a prospect hoarder as you'll find.. but I think Chicago would be fine moving a couple picks when they currently have 15 first or second round picks in the system.. to go along with a few other prospects taken in later rounds who have or are starting to emerge as quality prospects/players (Shaw, Smith, Nordstrom, Dahlbeck, Mattson, Carruth, etc)

We already have more prospects of the quality we would get this year than we really need. We're okay taking a pass this year if trading the pick would help us out.

I'd like them to draft a goalie if there's a good one around in the second round. Subban would be nice but I have a feeling he'll be long gone.

With the amount of prospects in the system our first rounder is one asset that I think is worth moving. If Stan can move some prospects though, I'd be OK keeping the pick.

honestly, I like what we have in the system outside of defense, so I'd gladly trade picks at this point for a #2 center or top 4 dman.

I could understand if we were picking 22nd or 26th. But 18th really isn't that bad.

Unless that first is in a package for a legit starting goalie or 2C it would be unwise to move our 1st.

we have a deep deep prospect pool. IF only every 4th of them becomes what they are projected, we still have enough young talent coming to support our longterm signed and still young core.

We don't need. We should use it to trade a #1 Goalie that will be here for the next 2-3+ years

If grigs is there, take him without a doubt, but I like the look of either Faksa/Hertl/Bystrom/Lindholm at 18.

Send a message via ICQ to DisgruntledHawkFan
Trade down or move it for a top six forward.

If you can get anything to make the NHL roster better now, trade it.

Trading down would be the last thing I'd do. I'd prefer us to trade if for a top 6 guy, but don't like the odds of that happening. If not, as others have said, then trade it for a first rounder next year. Also have a difficult time seeing that... so I'd rather just hope to get a top end talent at 18, than trading down. We have enough mediocre roster filler type prospects, I want more top end talent like Saad.

I am indifferent. But as stated above where we don't have picks in the 2nd/3rd round it might not be a good idea to get rid of this pick for a short term fix or immediate help. I would hate for the prospect pool to dry up on us in a few years because we get in this habit of trading picks. I don't believe in mortgaging the future for win now.

That's a pretty well thought out trade. I'm not sure they go for it though, but yeah, I would as a Hawks fan. You should post that on the main boards. Isles fans like Hammer, they may like the deal.
