It's one of those things that make sense until you remember this:

I bet that Ol Bruce would be thrilled to have Semin back.

Right?

"But the recently fired Boudreau said his relationship with Semin was not a bad one.

“As far as Alex Semin goes, I think I understood him better than most,” Boudreau said. “I talked to his agent at length in preseason, and I think we were on a pretty good same level of thinking. He might've wanted to play more, and the ice time he was talking about, but what player doesn't want to play more? I don't know. I think he wanted to score more.”"

Semin is UFA. He doesn't figure to be back. His rights aren't worth that much--maybe a mid-round pick--so call him for the 3rd a wash.

That leaves Green for Ryan. Caps take that every day of the week.

Silly deal for the Ducks, IMO. Just wait until July 1 and make Semin an offer.

Yeah, this is baffling.

Edit: If we were to go balls out for a Capitals defenseman, I imagine it would be Carlson, not Green.

Semin doesn't want the coach who took away pking away from him in the first place.

Green + Laich for Ryan.

Boudreau likes Laichs ********.

I like Mike Green a lot, but I'd probably pull the trigger on this one.

Big no on the re-signing Wideman part, though.

Rather make a silly offer for Parise than give up what it would take for Ryan.

Any chance Getzlaf is available if the team is out of the playoffs at next year's deadline?

I don't think making or missing the playoffs is what will decide his fate here. Contract talks will determine his fate.

No thanks.

While I don't watch a lot of Caps games, Semin doesn't strike me as a cycle guy who could play with Perry and Getzlaf, and if he plays on the 2nd line then we still don't have a 2C to play with him. Mike Green does not fit our need for a shutdown dman on the blueline either.

If the Ducks move Ryan, then it needs to be for younger depth to spread out the salary dollars including a 2C, not to add more high end talent to make the roster even more top heavy.

I think Anaheim would really benefit from grinders/tough players so i do not think this trade would work. I think they have great talent, but are missing some character. If they can bring in a few defenders with a Dennis Seidenberg/Mark Stuart attitude, and maybe 2 forwards who play the game on the edge like a Jordan Tootoo, they will be on the way to the postseason.

That's the style of player I would guess Anaheim needs. I could be wrong.

I don't think Anaheim wants anything to do with Alex Semin. The deal is basically Green for Ryan which the Ducks would say no to.

You're not wrong, at least regarding character forwards. Last season was the softest forward group the Ducks have iced post lockout. DSP and Getzlaf were about the only forwards that would hit on a consistent basis. The D was pretty physical with Brookbank, Beauchemin & Sbisa though. Lydman is capable of being pretty physical also but the shoulder injury limited him somewhat.

Wouldn't want both Semin and Ryan on the team. We need more character and grit up front.

Edit: I see that's been said.

Wouldn't mind Semin, but his rights aren't worth much, and Green is someone we definitely do not need. Big pass on this one.

I think a better deal might be centered around Carlson for Ryan.

To Ducks:
Carlson
16th overall pick
Boston's 2nd rd pick

To Caps:
Ryan
6th overall pick

Caps can replace Carlson with Orlov and still have a competent top 4. Add some cheap bottom pair Dmen from Free Agency and the blueline is still in good shape. They also add a top line finisher for Ovechkin's wing and/or some talent to play with Semin if he decides to stay in Washington.

Ducks get one of the best young Dmen in the League and a load of salary cap space.

Cap space isn't a need at all. Carlson is someone we'd like to have, but I don't think we'd pay the price necessary to land him. We're just going to have to settle on watching him and Fowler play together at the international level.

Ducks and Caps don't strike me as good trading partners. Both teams' biggest needs are a 2C to provide secondary scoring and a shutdown D to round out the top 4.
