There is no way a team trades the 6th overall for Smid.

Love Smid but, yeah, no chance he gets us the 6th overall.

Who has more value?

Gagner or Smid?

Smid ... he has more value to the Oilers anyway. Depends on what your team needs are (insert Gagner joke here).

Not that I am totally disagreeing with you but Smid was himself a 9th overall pick in what was a below average draft year. The Ducks my not want or are able to wait on someone to develop at the 6th pick. It took Smid almost 6 years to become the player he is.

Imo, it's a toss up.

Much of it has to do with Gagner being almost 4 years younger than Smid.

I wouldn't trade Smid for the 6th. Smid has developed into a legit top 4 d-man and he still seems to be getting better.

Im not sure I would call Smid a "legit" top 4 defender just yet.

Smid is definitely a legit top 4 defender. He is a shutdown d-men but that doesn't mean he isn't a top 4 defencemen.

Trade Smid, the heart and soul of this defence for a pick to draft a guy who might be as good as him six years from now?

Sounds like a perennial rebuild move.

Dumba should be there at #6 along with Rielly/Teräväinen/Trouba/Reinhart.

That's if Yakupov/Forsberg/Galchenyuk/Murray/Grigorenko are all gone already (which they likely will be).

If those were all there at #6 you'd have to think the Oilers would lean towards Reinhart if they got that pick as it seems they have him on their big 5 list.

So Willis shares an interesting piece on ON asking if the Oilers should take a flyer on Latendresse.

It's an interesting proposition. The guy has basically had two write off years due to concussions, but before than was a pretty decent forward. Physical, could cycle, potted 27g with a good chunk of them at ES. He's also 25.

Now of course the biggest issue is if he is over the concussion stuff. He claims he is 100% and he's been working out like he was before the issues.

He also claims he is sure Minny will cut bait with him. So he'd be a UFA come July 1st.

So would you take a punt on Latendresse?

Smyth in a second. Foot speed is another issue for Latendresse too though.

I actually really like the idea of signing Latendresse. I never considered the possibility that Minny might let him go. He could be the big, physical winger that we are missing in our top six. He would also fit well on our third line if he struggles offensively. The only downside is his injury history.

To Latendresse sure why not. I would rather take a flier on him then overpay to keep a 3rd liner around. He is the exact type of player we need if he can regain his form and stay healthy.

Absolutely. I brought it up earlier in the season. He'd be an awesome fit in the top 6 if he can stay healthy. I'd offer him the same contract he just had with Minny (2 years, 5 million) or 1 year 3-4 million

Say yes to Latendresse...new slogan for our summer? It rhymes

In all seriousness, Latendresse is intriguing but I only want him if he is 100 percent. The Oilers have had WAY too many injury problems and Latendresse's middle name is injury. If he's 100 percent, he could be the steal of free agency, at least for us.

Along with defense, adding 1-2 (prefferably 2) big wingers with scoring touch is our biggest need IMO.

I'd take a flyer on Latandresse as well, but he had effort and consistency issues when he was with Montreal. He did seem to turn a corner when he was dealt to the Wild though.

The questions on Latendresse are obviously health and consistency.

Regarding his health, if I were the Oilers, I'd check, double and then triple check regarding his concussion issues.

Last thing you want is to risk further injury to a guy with previous concussion issues.

Secondly you want to be sure with whoever the new coach is that he fits. If Hall isn't 100% after his surgery, and Smyth continues to decline, adding another ?, especially one with consistency issues, doesn't make sense for us does it now?

If he does check the boxes above, I'd offer a 2 year deal. If he can get back to his form pre-concussions, it would give us a pretty decent contract for a guy who should outperform if he gets back to form.

I'd trade Smid for the 6th if one of Dumba, Murray, or Foresberg were available.
And thinking about it, it is pretty likley that Dumba would be...

Either way, I doubt the Ducks do this.
